Luckily for me that 'J Savile' is spelt differently... Glad I'm not related!
unitserve vs core in ethernet mode
Posted by: French Rooster on 11 January 2017
i am interested in this topic: is unitserve /ndx or uniqute or nds vs core /the same is better or not in sound quality? unitserve and core as servers with streaming dacs. sorry for my english.
You are not the only one who wants to know the answer! We may need to be a little patient though - I don't think there are going to be many Cores out there for a little while yet.
To keep a fully open mind on this, there are other options that might be on anybody's shortlist right now: Various NAS drives, Melco, etc.........

I think you're right, but perhaps it went cold due to lack of gear to make the comparison......or maybe the name just put people off
Again I have the logs that show the inter frame timing from media servers on the Ethernet that sound subjectively the best to my ears. This requires more specialised network equipment to measure. But I can use it to confirm SQ differences between different media servers - consistently.. however for now I will refrain from posting my analysis as my sound results are based on beta firmware of streamer software and the differences in SQ are determined here in large by the streamer and the TCP/IP processing coupling noise from the streamer.
This assumes the media is identical - and in all tests I have done it is - assuming the rips are identical to start with....

Using a UnitiLite with the Core and Serve, all connected to a network switch, I can't reliably tell the two servers apart. Speakers are the highly revealing Graham Audio LS5/9.
Interesting...
I wonder if an NDX or NDS might show a difference between the two Naim servers. I guess someone will at some point try this out.
I could not hear a difference between the uServe and a Synology (Minim) and a QNAP (Asset) nas. That made my decision easy.
