Noob question re NAC42 output sockets

Posted by: Worcester Wheeler on 13 January 2017

Simple question - what is the unmarked 4 pin socket to the extreme right on the rear of a NAC42 preamp? I have recently moved my aged system ( NAC42 Snaps, Nap 140, CD 3.5 and LP 12) to another room as I hadn't really used it for years. On replugging all cables etc which took a while to figure, I noticed this extra output and didn't know what it was. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.

The socket on the right is to connect to an amplifier or power supply. Are you saying that the snaps is connected to the 42 and there is another 4 pin socket? If so, maybe the 42 has been modified along the way. There was a 42XO that included an electronic crossover - maybe it's that.

Thanks. There is a phono input, then 5 pin din tape and tuner inputs and a 4 pin din socket marked "Output" to connect to Snaps (which in turn connects to power amp). It's all working ok, though LED on Snaps doesn't light up I know it's powering the NAC ok, but I was curious as to what the additional 4 pin output was.

Depending upon the age and configuration of your NAC42, you may well find that the last DIN4 is not connected.  It was used for when the NAC42 was either configured or converted to a NAC42XO, whereby you could connect two NAP110s and one would power the pre-amp circuitry and the other would power the internal active crossover board.

My 42 was originally like that - with an extra DIN 4 pin socket for the 42XO conversion option, as Richard says. (I think the idea was to have a 42 & two 110's, to drive Linn Saras actively...?)

The spare DIN got removed and replaced by a DIN 5 pin 270 degree socket, when the 42 became to 42-5 (either as new build or by conversion - mine was converted).
