Nac A5 upgrade

Posted by: Dmitriy on 14 January 2017

Hello !

interesting in upgrading nac a5 cable, i love it's punchy, natural sound, but found that my current amp (nait 5si) produce more details to PMC tewnty 22 and can sing tonally wider through chord epic twin, for example. But chord doesn't have punch\energy to make sound more realistic. Maybe someone have positive experience in upgrading nac a5 ?

Thanks

Super Lumina is the Naim upgrade to NACA and I think it is superb. But it is expensive and a more affordable option would be Tellurium Q - either 'Black' or the more expensive 'Green' produce excellent results in a Naim system.

Heard raving reviews about the TQ black. Have you tried the cheaper TQ ultra blue?

I've only heard the TQ Black and TQ Green. A friend used Black in his Naim system and I had Green in my system, before replacing it with Super Lumina. Hence I can recommend both.

Dmitriy - do you have access to a good Naim dealer, that can organise home demos of Naim equipment?

We can go through the whole catalogue of Naim boxes, but all this will be a pure theory for you, based on what others have heard. You have already received feedback on your Nait that's it's a weakest part of your existing set up.
My suggestion is that you ask your dealer to set up few systems for you and you start testing them. Nothing that we will write will replace the best test equipment - your own set of ears.

Good luck!

this is the key of the problem !  i don't have dealer in my town so i can take listening in another city  and you know this is not the same as home audition. Ok i'll try to have  a trip to nearest dealer !

Thanks for everyone who answered my question !

I think you are getting in a muddle. You seem to be streaming music to the Qute, which the V1 will not do. As I said yesterday, the logical approach is to add a power amp to your Qute. A 200 would be ideal. Jon also suggested getting a used original 250, which would also be good. Then swap the Qute for a 172, or even a 272. Alternatively sell the Qute and the Nait and get a SuperUniti. The V1 and XS would be pointless. Does that help?

Please accept my apologies for starting this off, as all you wanted was new speaker wires!!

in case of dac v1+ xs2 i thought to use chromecast as source via toslink, 24\96 is enough for TIDAL, spotify and lossless files from upnp server (i don't listen DSD music).

Or i'm wrong ?

Superuniti  is  damn cool  device but too expensive for me  now, i have to sell all music stuff  for this upgrade

I tried a Chromecast and it was dreadful. You'd be daft to swap a proper streamer for a £30 bit of plastic. And you'd have two preamps. No, no, no. Just get a 200, plug the Qute into it and see how it goes.

ok,   try to change 5si  on 200. Thanks !

Unlike HH keeps saying, CC Audio using toslink is indeed a proper solution. Especially given the amount of money you need to pay for it and the wide support by all kind of applications. Also, you won't have streaming issues like the Naim streamers have (or had) with Tidal. Gapless support is lacking.

Key is to pair the CC Audio with a proper Dac. There are even people on this forum having the NDS and bypass the Tidal streaming issues by a ChromeCast Audio.

Go for it.
