Maintenance costs
Posted by: Oldenbroke on 15 January 2017
I am currently considering upgrading my 152 / 155 with a used 202 / 200 / Hi-cap. My concern is that they are over 10 years old and although working now,may require servicing in the near future. Can anyone give me a rough cost of servicing so I can evaluate whether this is a good deal or not? If not I will hold off and wait for a newer set or save even longer for new. Thanks.
The 200 and Hicap require recapping now. If you contact Class A in Sheffield they will tell you. I'd expect you are looking at £500+ to do both.
Thanks HH. That's a lot to add to the purchase price. I will hold off for now.
Hi. As said200 and hicap need now
Also, not really worth buying used hicaps nowadays they re priced arounnd 400£ ,even though they re generally reliable in the used market you re expected however to be charged for recap and shipping. Furthermore they re not DR which is a huge leap in performance and a must IMHO .You can still DR them ,at least the ones before the latest , I think but at a cost.
I think it possible that you might get more pleasure from the newest FCXS you can find. Put both outputs onto the NAC152XS. Will give you a nicely balanced set for a vfm outlay.
Chris
No need to buy all three boxes at the same time, just look out for a good used example of each at the right price, and change them one at a time. Each step should bring improvements to your current system.
Thanks very much for the replies. I already have a FCXS on the 152 and would consider transferring it to my Stageline. You are right Chris, replacing one at a time would be a sensible option and allow me to select much newer used options. It's easy to see these as a 'set' when offered together.

Put it in your profile then.

Oldenbroke,
I never do it (I'm basically bored, superficial and uninterested in my fellow men), but some members look at your profile first, to check your equipment and know what it's all about – the way policemen check your papers even when you stop them for informations...
So, forum rules #1, 2 and 3: Update your profile; use the search function; try for yourself before asking.
(That said, if everyone did so, most of the forum members would have nothing left to do... Now, enjoy!
)

P.S. Sorry, MMM - monday morning mood..
Hey, don't tell people that! If everyone did that I'd have nothing left to complain about, and then what would I do? ![]()

P.S. I have always been very doubtful about servicing, because true as it is that it brings your older equipment to specs again, it is definitely costly, and I wondered about wether I'd hear a difference. Then, I recently had an older Supercap fully recapped, my 282 also recapped and the BIAS of my 250.2 regulated (plus the logo replaced); the difference is audible, and fully positive.
So, rule # 4: Servicing older units is a good thing – provided you agree to spend for it.

Huge,
don't tell me that... I lose my way in the search function, and am too lazy to open profiles. A guy asks, I try to help if I can. That's it for me. I don't care if he hasn't spent a morning reading all the previous posts about the same topic since 2001. What's this, a forum about a pastime or the National Service?

Look at it this way: servicing is not cheap, but by buying second hand, you spread the cost and spread the enjoyment. If audio is a hobby - like I see it mostly - it is a lovely and nice way to go.
This year my 16 year old Nait 5 is going for service. It might cost more than I paid for it s/h.
I don't see all these concernings about maintenace cost.
After all we are talking of premium items that we pretty much use every day when, on the other hand the servicing cost of the most basic city car it's no less than 200/250 euro a year or 15'000 km here in Italy.
For the record i just payed over 55 euro for a headlight bulb of a Toyota IQ

I can indeed buy a Nap 200 / Nap 250 a year based on my yearly car costs.
Not to mention the gas yearly bills for home heating nearly would buy me a 250DR

Does the equipment you are thinking of buying sound better than what you have? Ignoring possible recaps, are you willing to pay that premium for what it sounds like ***right now***? Things that need recapping aren't going to fall apart in a shower of molten metal, it's just that they could sound better than they do. I'd focus on the current benefits, rather than what you might or might not bother to fork out in the future.

Very true, but there is a reason why people are with Naim. If they would be o.k. with mediocre stuff, Panasonic or so would have been ok.
Supporting your comment: my 16 yr unserviced Nait 5 manages my CM5's well. Far better than my regular consumer electronics do. So, current benefits are likely to be there given my own experience.
My unserviced 500 is of similar vintage
. I think that the heart of his argument is an unspoken concern that he isn't getting the sound of a new box for the price of an old one.
I feel I must apologise for the trouble caused by a simple question. I could have spent ages looking through old posts but I wanted an up to date cost of servicing to help with the decision process, not one from 2002. My decision to upgrade is my decision to upgrade and I would listen before buying. I wasn't asking how else I could organise my existing equipment and so it didn't occur to me to check my profile was up to date. I shall take all this into account next time I post a question. Thanks for all the input anyway.
No worries Old And Broke (most remarkable nice name to ask questions about servicing). We're just a bunch of lost souls who can talk about anything. Even if it is about similarities of Little Russian border corrections to plastic surgery.
Email support@naim.com with details of your kit and they will happily quote recap/service costs. They did for me anyway about 6 months ago (about £330 each to service a 200 and 202, since you ask, but obviously YMMV).
My amps are both well past their service-by dates, I just haven't got around to arranging it yet and have difficulty doing so when they still sound so good. I'd rather have them sounding less than their ideal than do without them for a week or two. Silly, I freely admit, but there it is.
