SL2 maintenance
Posted by: pylod on 16 January 2017
I own a SL 2 for over 10 years now and wondered if als a loudspeaker need some kind of recap or maintenance ? My whole set is going to be shipped to Naim for the Dr upgrade. I will have a replacement amp in the meantime and didn t want to send the speakers for a check. I though was wondering if the crossovers need a kind of recap after some periode as well ? Any thoughts would be appreachiated.
It would appear that Naim do not service their passive crossovers.
Oh is that so ? I heard they can acctually.
They used to but I don't think they do now since they stopped making the crossovers.
A couple of years ago, they wouldn't service crossovers because it was possible to simply buy a new pair for the same amount of money that a service would have cost.
Now that new pairs aren't available, it might be worth contacting Naim and asking about servicing again.
And if they won't do it, there are others who probably will if you ask them, such as Witch Hat.
When I contacted Witch Hat last year I was told they didn't work on speakers.

If it's only the crossovers that need a service, try contacting Class A in Sheffield. They service the black boxes and are an approved Naim service centre.

I asked them a while back, and they quoted me around £200 to service SBL crossovers. Perhaps they've changed their policy, but I suspect it could be a wording issue - did you ask specifically about crossovers?
Thank you everyone. That is good to know, that someone is still doing it. But does it need to be done in intervals like naim boxes or rather just when it sounds off ? Is there an interval for replacing tweeters or bass elements as well ?
I was told by Naim that "we have never serviced any of our loudspeaker crossovers"
Thank you for the quote. Interessting to know, so i don t need to send them in.

Well the conversation didn't even get that far. I had bought some SBLs and I eventually realised that one tweeter was dead after being puzzled by what seemed a lack of balance. I rang up them up to see if they could help with diagnosis and repair (I told them that my assumption was that it would be either tweeter or crossover) and got the reply I posted earlier. This would have been late September, I think.
