ReadyNAS Duo new drives - now much faster

Posted by: Scarydog on 05 August 2011

Hi all,

Thought I would share this experience in case it helps anyone.

I have a ReadyNAS Duo and originally stocked it with 2 x 2TB Western Digital Green drives. The performance was OK.

A week ago one of the drives started giving me trouble and I couldn't resync properly. So I decided to bite the bullet and replace the drives, as I had heard that the greens weren't an ideal match for a NAS.

I bought 2 x 2TB Western Digital black, I hadn't expected any real increase in performance so I was astounded when I got it up and running. The first thing I noticed was rezyncing the array was twice as fast!

The second thing I notice was that nstream was now quite snappy when browsing music. Previously it had been barely tolerable.

So all in all, if you are putting together a NAS I would say avoid WD Greens and go for Blacks.

Wd greens were never designed for raid, do a search on the google for the explanation, something to do with its firmeware and how it acesses. I had a single one and three others and it slowed my nas up by about half

Yes, I realised that after I bought them. The reason I went with the greens was because there was a list on the forum here of NAS that Naim had certified as working for streaming and one of the was the ReadyNAS Duo with WD Green.
