ALAC to MP3

Posted by: Obsessed1 on 07 August 2011

Sounds crazy, I know.  I have an Audi Q5 that has an internal hard drive that will *only* accept MP3.  I can't download CDs or anything I have recorded on my 64 mb ipod because the "jukebox" feature only will record mp3 format.  The B&o soundsystem is pretty good (although likely not quite up to par with the Naim system on the Bentley... )

So, my "simple" quesion is this:  how can I record onto a recordable cd or sd card anything from my iTunes library (I have an iMac) so I can upload this onto the Audi's internal drive?

<I know that from a sound quality perspective moving from ALAC to MP3 likely is a step backward>

Thanks for understanding...

 Hi Obsessed1.

If I've got what you want to do right, it is easy.

  • Open iTunes
  • File>New Playlist (new playlist if you want)
  • Click Music (to see your entire music library)
  • Drag individual songs (can do a chunk by selecting the one at the beginning then while holding the shift key down select the last song in the chunk. Then drag the entire selection over the playlist) of whole albums (grab the album cover and drag over the 'playlist')
  • I think a CD will take about 4 CDs worth of MP3.
  • File>Burn Playlist to CD
  • Click MP3 CD
  • Follow instructions

You may have to reduce the amount of songs to fit on one CD but if you may a HUGE Playlist a nd burn at once yo will just be instructed to put in another CD when the Mac/PC has finished burning each CD.

That's how you do it on a Mac anyway.

I've got to do a similar thing so thanks for the information Neil.

Another related question - how do you do the same with a USB stick or SD card please?

Having worked out for myself (plus a bit of Googly-type help) that what I needed to do was select a group of songs, right-click on them & it should say "Convert to MP3", then you end up with an MP3 copy of the songs along with their original ALAC versions.

However, for some reason this only offers to "Convert to Apple Lossless" (which they already are) & if you click on this it just makes duplicates. Odd. Help appreciated!

You need to go into iTunes preferences and under the 'General' tab you should see an 'Import Settings' button. Click that and change it to the option you desire. Whatever you select here will be the option iTunes gives you to create a different version.

Remember to change it back afterwards so when you import CDs in the future you're not doing so as MP3.

Thanks Ben. Seems a bit convoluted but, hey, it works!
