N272 keeps dropping connection to iradio

Posted by: Col on 19 January 2017

Hi,

I've recently bought an N272 which I'm using wired to my ASUS router through the mains.  I'm experiencing intermittent drop-off from an iradio connection and wondered whether anyone can help me to identify what the problem is and how I can resolve it.

I've spoken to my ISP who claim there are no connection issues.

I've also been in contact with ASUS who suggested a firmware update which I've done but without improvement.

Can anyone who has had experience of this make some suggestions to solve please?

Thanks

I'd suggest you run a proper ethernet wire and stop using those horrid mains things. We had an Asus router - 800U or somesuch - and it was quite temperamental. We swapped to an AirPort Extreme, which has been rock solid. The AE is connected to a Virgin hub used in modem mode. Internet radio runs for hours on end with no issues.

Col just try to set mtu to your router, i had similar problem with nd5xs and cisco ea6700 so it's possible to drop packets because of this parameter. Try to isolate the network, and let only 272 connected to your router. Just search on google how to set mtu settings for your router, and do some tests.

Hi Adi, thanks for that suggestion - I thought it might be a winner but after a bit of homework I've run an MTU test through the router and it highlighted fragmentation after 1472 bytes which I take to be equivalent to an MTU of 1492 (1472-8+28).

1470 bytes from 8.8.4.4: icmp_seq=28 ttl=57 time=30.467 ms
1471 bytes from 8.8.4.4: icmp_seq=29 ttl=57 time=32.016 ms
1472 bytes from 8.8.4.4: icmp_seq=30 ttl=57 time=34.998 ms
556 bytes from router.asus.com (192.168.1.1): frag needed and DF set (MTU 1492)

When I check the MTU setting of the Asus RT-AC68U router it's already set at 1492 so nowhere to go!

Any comments on my simple logic or any other suggestions for things to try gratefully accepted!

Thanks

Col

Try a proper ethernet cable as suggested above and see if that cures it.  Even if you just have to lay the cable on the floor, do the experiment.  Ethernet over mains can be so unreliable that it's worth eliminating that possibility first.

I am not saying that ethernet over mains is not at fault in this case, and I agree that a wired connection should be tried ...

... but iRadio on my Mu-so appears to be working fine via the set of BT Broadband Extender Flex units that I am using.  Have not experienced any iRadio drop outs at all becauce of this setup, so it does not always have to be as horrible as one could be lead to believe.

My setup is BT HomeHub 6 -> ethernet over mains - > Netgear Gigabit Switch GS105 -> Mu-so. Ethernet cabling is Vandesail Cat.7.

Would I prefer a wired connection? Yes, but unfortunately not possible where I live (read: WAF).

Have you considered a wifi range extender. I'm using a Netgear EX6150-100UKS paired to my BT HH5 (sited in the hall downstairs) and run short ethernet patch cables via a Netgear GS105 switch to my UQ2 in the back bedroom upstairs. This allows me to stream 24bit/192kHz wav files without any dropouts.

It's highly variable from home to home.  Same with wifi.  We cannot extrapolate; what works in one home may not work in another.  The fact that ethernet over mains works for some does not mean that it'll work for all, unfortunately.

I had my n272 running since early in 2016 with no drop out problems and for the last two weeks been getting the occasional drop out in iRadio. Specifically on Radio Paradise.   I have checked to if the buffer is getting empty but the buffer is full, but still getting dropouts for a few seconds every now and again... I put this problem to the source vs networking or the n272... I will try other Internet stations to see if I get similar issues...

Radio Paradise 320kbs steam is very stable - any dropouts are most likely down to your ISP network or your home network settings.

Are there any other steaming services being used at the same time like Netflix or similar?

I was struggling with dozens of dropouts a day on a wired cat 6 network.

the solution for me was to place my isp issued modem/router into bridge mode and hand over router duties to my Apple AirPort Extreme.

320 radio paradise has been fabulous ever since. Now I finally feel like I am getting the speed I paid for.

Can I guess - the ISP hub is Virgin ???

Good advice above, try it wired, which rules out connection issues, and if you still have drop outs consider buying a decent router and connecting to your hub in modem mode.  I do the latter with a Virgin Superhub 2 mainly because the wifi is poor.  It was a pain in the bottom but putting in a wired connection between my upstairs router and my living room, with a switch on the end, was a really useful thing to do - three hours work and a cost of about sixty quid but I don't have connection issues with anything

Good solution - simple and effective IP and other network 'thingies' management from Apple AirPorts. They really are designed well for home use and more importantly work well with Naim.

Adam... if you are getting a stable team on the 320 Paradise station then as you say it must be something on my network... I will do a bit of digging...

Most likely. Have a look at the following settings:

IP handling - DHCP is the one to go for.

IGMP snooping - sometimes it interferes. If it's ON switch to OFF. If it's OFF leave it like that.

All, many thanks for your suggestions and comments, much appreciated.

I took Hungry's advice and made an ad hoc wired connection between my router and streamer - this resulted in much improved stability, no drop-outs.

Having started experimenting, I then decided to try a wireless connection (not tried since I moved from a Superuniti to the N272 and upgraded my router) - this also gave a stable performance.

Result - I'll stay with the wireless connection until I can run a specific hard wired solution.

Thanks again

Turn your computers off - they're probably eating all your bandwidth.
