DR Amp Characteristics

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 22 January 2017

Pre DR, the black box amps had different enough Characteristics - where it was not just more of the same thing as you went up the chain. There were also posts about how the 250 and 500 were kind of in the same camp and the 200 and 300 in a other - and I have my take on it as well that I won't go into .. much... (200 fast, 250 not as fast but meatier, 300 not having the same addictive feel as the 250 but more musical a tad boring but a great partner for the 252, and the 500 which I hear the sounds a little more like the 250 - but way bigger scale...)

Any comments on whether some of this still holds for the new series of amps?

My 250.2 was upgraded to DR, and it had no effect on the hum behavior.

MM,

Don't wish to hijack your thread but am really interested to understand why you think the Forest signatures are a good match for the 250 and Kudos S20s for the 300. Am thinking of the Forest Sigs for my 252DR/300DR so keen to hear your thoughts.

Kudos S20s + 300 good match since the designer of the kudos 20s speakers mentioned he voiced them with the Nap300.

Totem Forest Signatures + 250DRs a good match since I'm running them fronted with the NDS/552 and love them. :-) - And the Totem Forest Signatures are oft demoed with a system consisting of the 272/250DR - by Vince - Totem's designer.

Either the Totems or the Forests will be better than the PMCs. ;-)

Cool thanks for that. The PMC OB1s are a great speaker but the rest of my system has moved past them. The Focal 1008's I have a love/hate relationship with them given their very clean almost clinical sound - considering Sopras but I suspect that Focal house sound may still be there.

Hi all .......... hum 250.2 hummed and was a real growler at times.......250DR a growler.........Nap500 humed and growled....and 500DR still hums...interestingly my 555ps is really quiet. I will be installing a dedicated mains feed at some point ......... possibly with a Airlink isolating transformer.............

Hum varies sometimes it is clear........... there seems to be no corelation between the equipment in our house and noise....

This side of naim ownership has frustrated me.... I was considering re seating the mains transformer on sorbothene.....

Mango - true Derek did develop the S20s largely around the NAP300  but the 250DR is far less speaker fussy than the 250.   I haven't heard the Totems - would be interested to hear.

Point on Rich, on a scale from 1 - 10,  with a 10 representing next to zero.

The last time I posted my system was on teetering on a six, as it relates to the Transformer's Hum

But this morning, she's clicking in at a gorgeous  eight !

I guess it's all dependent on The Grid, and whats going on that time of day, outside your home, and inside your home!

But it is frustrating at times!
