Unitiserve backup

Posted by: Mike A on 22 January 2017

Having been the owner of a Unitiserve for some time now, I have finally taken the plunge and purchased a NAS to ensure I have a reloadable backup should there be any future problem.

Hands up, I'm not familiar with the world of NASs and have bookmarked ChrisSU's helpful overview post from March last year.

Progress - I've now got a Synology DS115j, with 2TB WDRed storage fitted, sitting on my network, with all the recommended packages installed even though my immediate priority is to get a backup in place. I have created a new shared folder on the NAS, but can see three Users - admin (system default user, status disabled), AustwickM (me, Normal) and guest (description Guest, Status Disabled).

So these are my questions - 1) what do I need to do regarding the admin account, shouldn't this be me? Do I need to enable it?, 2) I can see how to edit the guest account, but there is a hidden (8 blobs) password - do I need to delete it,change it or set is the same as my own?) and do I need to untick the Disable this account box. Basically, what specific settings do in need to apply to the shared folder I have created.

I'm sure there will be more queries along the way and possibly a call to Naim at some point, but in the meantime I'de be grateful for the shared experience of forum members,

Thanks, Mike

Mike - have a look at this paper for setting up Synology with Unitiserve

I used that doc. to help setting mine up - it's a shame its based on an old version of the Synology firmware, which now looks quite different, but as I remember, it isn't too hard to work out how to do the same things with a newer NAS. Then make sure you have the Unitiserve manual for instructions on how to set up the automated backup, as that part is not covered by the above. I probably uttered a couple of expletives while I was figuring this out, but looking back on it, it wasn't really that hard, and the automatic backups have worked ever since, with no further effort on my part.

Mike, before you start the backup, is your music stored in WAV or FLAC on the Unitiserve? If you want the option of playing from the Synology (or other devices) in addition to backup, you should convert to FLAC on the US before you transfer the files, otherwise the metadata will be unreadable. It will also make the file transfer quicker.

That's great thanks - I'll have a look at the Synology document this evening. It's not immediately clear what the admin account does or how it needs to be set up.

Regarding FLAC, I've ripped to this format in my Unitiserve from the outset.

When setting up my QNAP I enabled all accounts with full read/write access. This way my UnitiServe can actually write to the NAS.

Admin is the top account that does everything - this should be you, so no need to create separate 'Mike' account if you administer your NAS.

Many thanks for the feedback - I've downloaded the guide which looks pretty comprehensive. I just need a spare hour one evening this week to get back to the task.

OK, a quick progress report. I now have 3 users set up on my Synology DS115j - admin, AustwickM and guest, all having Read/Write permissions to a shared folder called unitiservebackup. I have checked the "Enable windows file service" checkbox and set "Workgroup" to "Naim".

Still not clear why, when I set up the device, the AustwickM user name created an additional account - I thought I was providing a user name for the admin account.

That aside, I think I've covered the steps set out in the Synology DS212j Setup document on Naim's site. My next problem is adding and enabling a new music backup. Typing the IP into my browser (Mac Safari) opens a page titled Naim - user interface. This lists mac address, IP address etc, but nothing about music stores / backups. Opening Mac n-Serve, under maintenance, I can see a share called \unitiservebackup which I have set to active. However, the button to Use as Backup (which is what I assume I need to set) has greyed out. Use as Store is not greyed out but this isn't what I want to do. Any suggestions please??

Thanks M

Mike - I'm typing from memory - I think there is a separate 'line' for backup which you should have designated as a backup when setting up a NAS. So it's neither a share nor a store.

Go to the Safari browser page you mentioned to set up the backup.

Go to System > Music Stores > Add New Music Backup.

...and...System > Network Shares > Manage Network Shares. The folder you created on the NAS should be visible. Select it, and click Enable.

Remember that the backup folder must be COMPLETELY EMPTY before you do this. Don't even open it until you've done the above, or you will get nowhere.

Chris - wasn't there a problem if a system trash folder was enabled by accident (I have some recollections of another thread some months ago...)

Sorry Adam, my memory isn't that good!

Now I remember.... one of the forum members could not activate a backup folder via US panel - it turned out a deaful setting on his NAS (QNAP) was with 'trash' folders which had something in them. So a back up folder had them too thus disabling the activation.

it's a;so good to disable the trash folders - some NAS would still 'serve' (make it visible but unplayable) the content of the deleted folder to a UnitiServe thus confusing the user.

Long story short Mike  - make sure the folder is empty before you activate is as a backup.

Many thanks both - however I'm really struggling to relate your advice to what I see in the Synology control panel and the Naim (n-Serve) or its IP address. Just tried, in n-Serve (Mac) to set up a backup. N-Serve has three options - Library (lists albums), Radio (lists stations) and Maintenance, which covers Network Shares, Network Stores, Move Album Monitor and Recycle Bin).

Under Network Shares I could see a list of the  shares on the NAS  - (\homes, \music, \photo, \video, \Downloads and \unitiservebackup). On the right hand side of the screen is a list of 'buttons' - Host scan, rescan, ignore, activate, set password, use as store, use as backup, add new... and remove. I highlighted unitiservebackup and clicked on Use as backup. Its now disappeared from the Network Shares list and now appears as a Backup Device  \\IPaddress\unitiservebackup Type-Backup Status-Online under Network Stores.

The question is - so what next?

Mike - can you post a screenshot of your N-Serve view (or email it to me - email is in my profile). Chris and I will have a look at it (if you email it to me, I wil forward it to Chris)

My post above is based on using the browser interface that you get by typing the Unitiserve's IP address into Safari. That's what I used to set up the backup, not N-Serve.

Yes, the newly created shared folder must be empty, and if the nas has created the new folder to also contain a 'recycle bin' then it's not seen as EMPTY by Naim.  There is a setting on the nas to not have it create a recycle bin in a newly created folder.

Mike if you get stuck then I recommend phoning Phil at Naim Support. He is a wizz at the US and Synology and can remote into your PC and sort it all for you if you need him to. I speak from personal experience.

best

100% agree with David's advice.

For those of us not overly confident with all things networking, (well ok, me then), Phil was only too happy to remotely set up my network, incorporating at that time my newly acquired NAS and HDX.

He took the view that it was Naim's job, well, his actually, to ensure that my Naim kit worked as intended, and could not have been more helpful.

Top man!

On the plus side, my NAS has saved a backup throughout today. However, I have spotted that some albums have not been included in the backup. Also, I have a small number of Downloads that have not backed up either. So a bit more still to do but a great start!

Mike - just dropped you a line on that...

The downloads folder cannot be included in the automated backup. I find it simple enough to get into the habit of copying any music I download to a separate backup folder on the NAS at the same time as copying it to the Unitiserve. Note also that you can't use N-Serve to edit metadata on a download, so edit it when you download, before saving it to the Unitiserve.

I want to publicly thank Adam and Chris for freely sharing their knowledge and nudging me in the right direction - through both postings here and emails. Alosi, thanks to all other posters. I now have my NAS set up and synced with the Unitiserve - this forum is an absolute gem!!

Good to hear you're up and running, Mike. Now it's done, you can pretty much forget all about it.
