RIP Jaki Liebezeit

Posted by: Kevin-W on 22 January 2017

The great drummer of Can has just died, aged 78, of pneumonia. Very, very sad news. Alongside Bonham, he was perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived, and certainly the most influential, alongside Bonzo and Gene Krupa.

Very sad Kevin. I love Can and as you say a phenomenal drummer.

very sad news, I saw him live about 3 years ago with 2 other drummers and they were excellent and he seemed a most unassuming man who genuinely seemed touched at the response he was eliciting. He certainly looked a sprightly (and healthy) 75 back then.

Always sad when anyone with such talent dies. I have long been an admirer of Liebezeit, and of John Bonham, but it always amuses me when anyone makes the claim, as always happens, about a or b being 'the greatest' or 'most influential ever'. We all have our favourites, but let's not turn it into a 'who's the best' contest, particularly at such a sad time.

Just my opinion, for what it's worth!

Has there ever been better drumming committed to vinyl than this?

And such funk! Impossible to keep bits of your body still (and Happy Mondays should be paying royalties). Agree he was of the first water and one of the most influential drummers ever (and I don't mind who I amuse).

Saddened by news.  He was due to perform with Irmin Schmidt and Macolm Mooney in London in April.

First saw him live in 1973- unlike others who had massive drum kits his was economical-but the sound!!  Can were and are my favourite group, Tago Mago is still my favourite album some 40+ yrs on

Last album of his i have bought is "Flut"- a collaboration with Hans-Joachim Irmler from Faust- aseries of improvisations and well worth a listen

This is also worth a listen- an hour chat with Jaki with tracks from his various collaborations

The Czukay/Wobble/Liebezeit album 'Full Circle' is a favourite.

Going to see Wobble tonight, it'll be interesting to see what he does...

Shocking week for drummers; Jaki, then Mike Kellie, now Butch Trucks.
