Muso won't recognise NAS
Posted by: CraigD on 26 January 2017
Hi everyone,
Got my MuSo today & can't seem to set it up. Got a synology Nas & tried at first to connect directly to MuSo. With light came on but no upnp light on input. Tapping the input button simply lights up each of the three lights. Light on side of muso is white.
So I then connected via a router (I do not have an Internet connection). All looks OK on router but same result on MuSo.
App seems useless. It just takes me to a screen where it says if I have a white light then all is working. It isn't...
Help!
You can't connect a nas directly, as you have found. Once you plug the nas into the router and turn it on, it takes a little while for the router to give the nas an address. If you then turn on the muso it should find the nas. Maybe try switching the muso completely off and then on again.
Still no luck. Muso plugged into router, turned fully on & off again but still not detecting NAS.
I thought this thing was meant to be plug & play...
Have you got a UPnP server running on the NAS? Synology's own, or Minim? You need that for the Muso (or any streamer) to see your music. Then both NAS and Muso need to be on your network, not directly attached to each other.
Yeah got upnp. Eventually got it to work but blimey what a faff. Basically every permutation of resetting each component.
Now up & running and it's impressive.
BTW... Can you fast forward tracks via the app? Doesn't look like you can.
Well done Craig. I have to say its not at all a faff if you know about networks, if you don't, then it must be a lot more than a simple faff, so well done for what you have done. Your story does raise a question; who was your dealer ?? they should have made sure you were capable of setting up or advising you how or doing it for you before they sold it to you.
You can fast forward on the app or at least I can on mine with NDX (I don't have a Muco) (what is your app iOS or Android) Anyhow, I expect you will have more questions as the days pass, so keep posting.
Why don't you post the system & personal details on your forum profile.
If I remember correctly, you can fast forward/seek to time when playing lossless constant bit rate files e.g. wav or flac but not with variable bit rate MP3 files.

Yes - the feature was there.... the slider bar seems to be malfunctioning on my iOS app (v5.4). Hmmmm....

Works fine for me (on 5.3 and 5.4).
Cheers for the replies. I bought the system online so I guess fair enough for the dealer (Sevenoaks) to send it out on assumption I knew what I was doing.
I'm running Android, with the naim app downloaded from the Google play store.
Re the ffwd, I get the player screen with a progress bar, but I can't tap on it. I do have ffwd buttons but they just flip to next track.
I also expected to see album art to scroll through when selecting an album to play but on the music menu screens I just get folder icons. When I select a track I then get a rather low res album art when track is playing.
I'm running a Synology NAS with about 1200 flac albums on, ripped from cd. Streaming via a newly installed Sky wireless router that hasn't had Internet activated yet.
The slider bar moves but the music takes a while to catch up. Say a second or so.
As HH says you should be able to slide the white dot backwards or forwards along the progress bar but it may take a second or so to take effect.
Weird. Slider bar is just 'there' for me. Doesn't respond to touch at all. Layers version of app.
For me, when the slider works, it's instant, no delay at all, but it often takes a few attempts to get it to respond at all. Maybe it's just my fat fingers, but I sometimes have to stab at it a few times before it will move.
Completely inactive for me. Only pause & ffwd /rewind work. Not a biggy but bit annoying.
Craig,
You're not streaming MP3 files are you?
No, all flac files.
Now Muso lost rooms. Was playing fine (sounds great when it does) but then stopped dead. When I tried to connect no music plays.
Sorry guys but I'm not a total novice & plug and play this ain't. On first impressions certainly not the hifi replacement I'd hoped for.
Can't remember a CD stopping mid way through a track & then not playing.
Managed to get it to play again by a full restart of the muso. Like I say bit of a faff to say the least. Great sound kin fact it's fantastic) but it needs to work reliably to be of any real value.
If you bought a hifi that stopped mid track, then refused to restart until you'd turned it off at the wall, it'd be back to the shop for a refund.
Craig - I sincerely doubt this is anything to do with the Mu-So itself. By the looks of the symptoms you have network problems, which cause the unit to be disconected from the network and thus from your NAS.
With a stable network, properly implemented NAS (with a UPnP server software) all Naim streamers are plug-and-play. The longest part of the setup process is connecting the cables.
Ideally your network should look like this (picture courtesy of Mike-B)
In the picture above NDX is your Mu-So of course.
I'm running the muso wireless. It's about 2 metres from the router/nas. The router is hardwired to the nas, with the muso not physically connected due to necessary location of router (linked to cable entry site in house in a place I don't want to place the muso).
Wasn't implying muso was faulty, just...
1. Took ages to set up compared with the "plays right out of the box" described in most reviews. See above.
2. Seemingly flaky app - see 'non ffwd issue' described above.
3. Random drop out halfway through song after playing great for an hour or so, only restored by full reset of muso system.
... Just saying that, for someone swapping from years of 'traditional' hifi, this first day hardly smacks of "plug & play". First impressions & all that.
To be fair though it sounds glorious.
Try to get yourself a £20 switch (a Netgear 105 is ideal) and set it up like in Adam's diagram, fully wired. It should then work day in, day out. The equipment really is plug and play - but only so long as the network infrastructure is working properly. Most people starting streaming have bumps along the road - I certainly did - but once it's all working it's a delight.
