Bye Bye 3DTV

Well it appears now LG and Sony have followed Samsung and pulled out of 3DTV - I can't say its a surprise and another failed technical consumer fad that joins the list of DCC, Minidisc, Betamax, 8 track etc...

I guess it just wasn't suited to the domestic environment ... but it is interesting to muse on what makes a successful format and what doesn't...

It's a pity that the BBC news item is presented as an opinion piece.

At the end it suggests that virtual reality films will be along soon. That will be the virtual reality experience that involves wearing a complete headset instead of just a pair of glasses. And is in 3D.

Where are these data polled from ? A few dead formats like SACD are still thriving with production and demand in some parts of the world.

Eastenders broadcasted in 3D on Christmas Day with alternative ending would have had everyone shopping at Curry's on the weekend just before !   Or perhaps most brits are happy with the soaps straight up to wash away the grime from low tech.

some stigma has to be attached to 3D in our popular culture due to the way most were first made aware of it - by being given away free if you bought the copy of The Radio Times that had those cardboard glasses with red and blue plastic, with naff programs on telly in the 80s.

It is not and never has been 3D, it's binocular which is completely different. 3D has parallax effects, binocular merely provides depth perception. Anyone who fell for the marketeers bulldust has got what they deserved.
