Berlin Phil new Direct to Disk recordings

Listening to Radio 3's Record Review yesterday, I was surprised to hear them discussing the (?new) release of Simon Rattle's Brahms cycle with the BPO, recorded in 2014 Direct to Disk:

I'd heard of D2D recordings done in the 1970s by Sheffield Labs, but didn't think even the recent vinyl revival would result in this particular technique being revived, especially in this context since classical buffs tend not to be terribly pro-vinyl in the way that rock fans often are. Still, it was interesting to hear Rattle describe how the 'one take' approach of direct to disc resulted in a special level of concentration and tension for him and the players.

It's not cheap, either...

Novelty idea in this day and age but so many other Brahms Cycles done better in terms of performance. There might be an extra tension and concentration but to my ears, it sounds too safe. ( I think that many of direct do disc recordings I have heard and even the ones I own exhibit the same pitfalls )

For one-take approach, Erroll Garner nails it.

Clare Teal recently recorded a D2D which I purchased a copy of ( http://www.analogplanet.com/co...#XGr3JAqC1ejDecc4.97 ) so this technique is making a revival (although perhaps not quite into mainstream). I believe that Clare only 'nailed it' on the second attempt so no doubt it is a fraught process for performers!
