USB Cable importance
Posted by: Bananahead on 30 January 2017
After a lot of procrastination I have finally started to build a setup for coppying vinyl to digital.
I am going to start with my 400 late seventies/early eighties 7"s.
I have bought a HRT Linestreamer+ that I hope will make nice digits.
It will be connnected to my 282 with a green chord cable once it has had its pins swapped in the DIN bit. 1 to 3 and 4 to 5 I think.
I will use Vinyl Studio and Audactiy as software.
Now my question. I need a USB B to A cable that will supply power to the Linstreamer+ and take the digits back to the PC. How important is this cable? Just good quality or something nicer?
For play back they certainly make a difference, so logic says it would on the record side. As too how much to pay for said cables it's "how long is a piece of string" question. Any from free to 'king expensive.
As usual let your ears tell you what makes sense.
Thank you.
I understand why it makes a difference in replay but I do wonder about recording. (the nagging bits are bits argument).
Maybe Audioquest Cinnamon then.
if you "understand why it makes a difference in replay" then why do you "wonder about recording" ?
This is not logical
I understand that in replay it is nice to pass good clean bits to the DAC - jitter control being important for example.
But I wonder if it is as important for recording - shouldn't what ends up on the harddrive be the same whatever the cable? And when it gets to the USB port it will then have some ordinary cable to deal with on the other side. Is there any such thing as audio grade SATA cable?
I'm going to use a good quality cable to supply analogue to the ADC - Whatever the green Chord cable was from a few years ago.

Quite - The easiest way is to try a couple of cables and see if you find a difference. You'll only want to do your vinyl copying once, so worth making sure you've got your setup optimised. The Chord Silver Plus USB is a decent cable for little money.

I'm sure someone would be happy to sell you one...

Yes there is. At least JCAT manufactures all sorts of cables and gadgets for your digital audio chain. There's few other also but I can't remember the names now. It's another thing then if audio grade SATA-cable makes any difference to the sound quality.

IIRC Didn't Malcolm Steward fall foul of that one ?

I have an air gap (wireless link) between my PC and NAS.
What sort of air purifier is best?
Anyway, 100 bucks spent on cable..

i seem to remember something like that, but knowing Malc as I do, i know he wouldnt flinch from saying what he sincerely thought was true even if he had no means of explaining it.
On a sidenote, he is still deeply unwell in hospital some 18 months after a horrific car accident. Coincidentally he is now in a specialist hospital unit in Salisbury. I'll be sure to give him a visit next time I am in the area. I know he has many friends at Naim.
I'm not doubting he did hear something but he did get a bashing from the 'I work in IT' brigade for stating so. Shame as i'm sure he was on to something interesting.
Yes i'd heard about the accident via FB. I hope he makes a good recovery although from what you say it sounds like a long road yet. I've enjoyed his writing since the Flat Response days.
I bought a cartridge for my LP12 from Malcom back in the day. I had an interesting conversation with him about which way round the rubber belt should be. I couldn't tell the difference...
I hope his recovery is not too long.
I've used tripplite u023-003 USB a to b with ferrite chokes on each end with good results. USB certified so you can be sure it does it's job, unlike some estotric expensive hifi USB cables.
