Is it time for a 282

Posted by: Scooot on 01 February 2017

Hi,

I am at a stage where I can afford a upgrade after quite sometime saving and the dreaded upgrade bug has also kicked in.

my current system is -

ndx-xps2 dr-202-hicap dr-napsc-200 on a fraimlilte.

I have not done the home demo yet but was looking towards changing the 202 for a 282.As this would be a huge investment for me I thought I would seek others opinions  with greater knowledge on this set up.

So basically is the 282 the most logical step up for my set up.?

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Scott

If I won the lottery, I'd make Naim 100% British (and Great!)again.

my advice would be wait until the replacement for the ancient 282 pre amp is brought out, which must be within the next 12-24  months, otherwise if this a big investment for you I would wait. I have your system but with a 282 and I am refusing to even think about upgrading to a 252 until the new range is released.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies so far,Some very positive comments toward the 282.I have in the last few minutes spoken to my dealer to arrange a home demo.He informs me that the 282 they have is out at moment but he will call me when it's available.

Which lottery are you participating in Tony - it must have a huge prize fund

Scott -

little late, sorry - yep the 282 will give a big upgrade on 202, I went the same route - 202 then 282 again both with HCDR

love the detail the 282 gives & works well with a 200 - next step for me is 250dr when budget allows!!

I'd definitely look for ex-dem or gently used.  It can really be a great value.  Naim that is just a few years old, at a substantial discount from new, is the way to go IMHO.

It is good value, but if no-one bought new where would the SH ones come from?

Does that mean Naim isn't great now?

Well we could do with some great Naim loudspeakers again

The company funds are rumoured to be around £20mil. That ain't a lot, is it? Also, I think if we start a "crowd funding" we could bring it back into British hands in no time at all!

I would have expected it to be more than £20M - so I'm in. Must check the sofa to see what is available

If I win the Euromillions on Friday that'll add another £14mil

Has anyone compared the 282 with the Townshend Allegri at less than half the price?

Scoot,
Given your system, an ex-demo 282 looks like the most sensible option, one that will make listening to music substantially more enjoyable.  A thoroughly good move.

Enjoy! FT

Scoot, definitely agree with all the recommendations for the 282, I'm sure with a little negotiation with your dealer you will end up with a good deal......

it just won't do, if it ain't, a 282!

Wow!

What new range?  Do you have some insider knowledge?  In any event the PSUs underwent a revamp a little while ago. And just supposing the current range were updated the current models would still sound as good.  Witness the number of 42, 52, 82 owners still enjoying their music.

Indeed, such speculation might have you waiting around for years. I did have similar thoughts before buying a 282 last year, but decided to just get on with it, and have no regrets now, despite the fact that I only use one input, so much of it is redundant.

Don't wait with the upgrade to the 282 just because somebody is hinting new products. Nobody knows when and if. And Naim has been very good in keeping everything up to date with the latest developments. An investment in a 282 is a good investment ...

Go for the 282 - a really good choice that will form a sound basis for the next steps if you want to go further.

Add a Supercap later on to replace the Hi-Cap. For even more, you can still go to 250 / 300 territory without outclassing the pre-amp.

Hi,

I have made the call to the dealer for the home demo as I mentioned above.

I probably already know that I will go for it as it's been the upgrade I have desired since my my ndx/xps2 dr purchase.

The majority of above posts and numerous searches I have done pretty much give me the confidence to buy blind if a home demo wasn't possible.

If I buy new or ex dem remains undecided at this time.I will take the 282 on demo when available and when I'm ready to buy I will see what's available.

Thanks to everyone who has replied on this topic.

Much have been said. New improved designs are nice though I wouldn't bother. Life is too short and you won't get back the years of waiting. If it sounds good then by all means go for it. All the preamps which include the NAC 202, 252 and 552 have withstood the test of time as there have not been any updates since they were introduced back in 2002, which is a testament to the quality of the units. Perhaps there isn't anything worthwhile that can be improved upon with preamplifiers, unlike power amps and power supplies which have been recently updated or DR'd. If there are imminent updates with the preamps, I suspect it would be more toward features rather than sound quality. If that happens, the Classic line of preamps would surely become a classic by then.

A curveball for you to consider. Swap the hicap for a supercap instead of a 282. Enjoy a supercharged 202. Upgrade the 202 to a 252 at a later date. This is also great if you are a vinyl user as your phone stage can be powered off the supercap (if Naim of course!).

Posted on: 02 February 2017 by Scooot

Ponty,

Going  to 282 has been goal of mine from fist starting out with a supernait 1.Its took a long while to save enough to get the 282 so at this stage my mind is made up (if all goes well on home dem).

I would at this point prefer a 282-hicap dr than get a supercap for the 202.

good idea.... stay with course and go for 282 and Hicap DR.

supercap on 202 won't turn it into a 282.
