Bristol Show 2017

Really looking forward to the Bristol Show this year and can't believe it's here again!!

Some really interesting things to look/listen to and meet up with the Naim personnel again!!

Maybe this is where we're going wrong. Instead of buying another pair of £500 speaker cables or interconnects. We should be buying our family and friends better Hi-Fi systems, so they can appreciate the sound quality and learn to love their hi-fi. :-)

i'll bet that today's whippersnappers listen to more music than their counterparts of 40 years ago. it seems like every kid in NYC walks around with earbuds installed at all times -- as fraught with peril as that may be.

...and some of these kids will catch the audio "flu" just like we did.

Looks like they're sat at a funeral. All looks rather awkward, someone needs to crack a bad joke or something to break the ice

I thought it just looked like one of those corporate AGMs where the shareholders want to sack the directors...

The Quad, Harbeth and Spendor rooms had plenty of younger listeners. Which is ironic!

They're devout worshipers of the cult facing the East [Salisbury is to the east from Bristol] and giving praise to the sonic blessings of the holy trinity [Pace Rhythm & Timing] from the sacred components placed upon the altar of naim fraim.

The women are in the hotel foyer drinking mocha coffee - it's the best thing at the show! ; )

The women, or the coffee?

Is this what they call 'Sarum Liturgy'?

I am actually collecting Naits for my kids. They get one when they go study somewhere or live on themselves.

I feel that an older Nait together with some second hand speakers is better value for money than a Muso.

Really - better value to you but not necessarily to your kids?  Naim aren't introducing Unitis and Musos for no reason.   I don't think my role as a parent extends to unduly influencing how they listen to their music.   I am though happy for them to raid my CD collection.

Now that strikes a Chord

The demographic of the people who buy Naim equipment and the demographic of people who go to hi-fi shows may not be the same. Speaking personally, I wouldn't ever go to a hi-fi show. Even if I was so inclined, which I'm not, who has the time? I have to earn money, and when I'm not doing that I have children and other responsibilities. I suspect people who go to shows are generally retired and/or empty nesters.

Too general a conclusion I would suggest.  I'm neither retired (until Dec this year) nor empty nested but I've still gone to a few shows over the years. It's a bit like saying that people who play golf on a Saturday morning are solitary folk.

Lindsay

Did anybody hear the new AE1 Active speakers at the show?

He may of not got it right but for me he is definitely in the  'home run ballpark'. It was my first HiFi show visit and I wondered beforehand what type of people will go to the show.  Lets say I am in the area of middle age (youngish!) but the writing was already on the wall when I had to queue to get in to the Marriot Hotel.  Vast majority of the queue were well advanced old male men and it carried on in the exhibition.  I thought if ever there were so many grumpy old men in one place this is it!  However there were the occasional young glamorous females which gave a nice mixture of people.  What I noticed also that the extra older old music lovers would occupy all the seats in solemn silence as they listened to slow jazz played from tube amplifiers, probably artist like Charlie Haden etc...

I can remember going to the Swiss Cottage Show in 1983 - launch of CD "perfect sound forever".  I was 24 and can remember thinking I seem to be a bit young for this!  I got married that year as well!

At any time from teens to now I might have been tempted to go to a hifi show  had there been one convenient to me, to have a chance to see and hear a wide range of different things, including things way beyond affordability or easy visibility, but I have never had the slightest interest in travelling any significant distance to go to one, nor to pay for entry to what after all is a manufacturers' showcase, so it has never happened and I suspect never will. Nothing to do with age, family, income or employment status - though just possibly after I retire, with more "spare" time (!), I might be more temptable.

I am not retired, I work for a living,  I am not a cotton top, I am married, my children have left home......BUT..

After being in denial, and having had much counselling,  I am now able to admit, I am a hifi addict.

After going to hifi anonymous meetings  I have learnt that it is best to be honest and open with my feelings, and tell the truth,  so here goes.....

Yes I enjoy going to hifi shows..........the Bristol show was very good........

You have named the problem and allowed your feelings to be expressed.  This is such a significant progress.  Now you must face your inner self again and decide what excites you most the a) music or b) HiFi ?  To answer this question sincerely you will reach the core of your understanding..!

And is it evidence of schizophrenia if someone oscillates between the two?

I don't think it is , but I will check with my imaginary friend.....

My imaginary friend says there is no such thing as schizophrenia, nor inner voices.
