Core files on Macpro finder
Posted by: David O on 06 February 2017
Hopefully I have posted this in the correct area...I have just set up my Core (fitted with recommended Seagate hard drive). So far I have ripped directly to this, then I have imported music from my Mac Pro (wirelessly). In both instances the music files are showing on my IPad naim app, however, when I look at the Core on my network (via mac) the unit is showing as expected as well as two files 'downloads' and 'music', however, I cannot save files to these and none of the imported files are showing either....am I missing something simple?
The 'Downloads' and 'Music' are folders, not files. When ripping discs, they are saved to the 'Music' folder. Open the folder and look in the 'MQ' subfolder, your ripped CDs will be there. The 'Downloads' folder is for what it's name says. You should be able to open and view both folders via the Mac.

Jan,
thanks for your reply. My apologies, I should have said folders rather than files. I have tried to copy a music file into the downloads folder and I get an error message (operation can't be completed because the original item 'downloads' can't be found), I have checked the subfolders and they are all showing zero bytes ...any more ideas?
David,
OK, I've seen that happen here too. Try logging into the Core from the Mac finder, using the IP address of the Core. You'll find the address in the Naim app, under 'Settings' then 'About'.
Jan
Jan,
Thanks again. I have done this again but still no joy..same error message. I am logged in as a guest...I presume this is ok (same as my NAS drives)...
Hmm. Have you tried rebooting the Core ? (Disconnect the power cord, wait, then reconnect).
Jan
Jan, tried that again ( did it yesterday also), subfolders disappear and then reappear as before (zero bytes) when rebooted. Interestingly I can import files from my public folder on mac to Core..and all of these folders show on my Core I pad app and play fine...
Not sure what else to suggest here other than to contact Phil Harris at Naim...
Thanks for helping Jan, I dropped a note to the Unit support team so hopefully they will come back with the solution...probably something I did wrong at the set up or something to do with permissions etc on my mac
David,
check the instructions again, and check the info on this site in the all topics. When you fit the new drive, firstly you gave to configure it to be a store for the core (as per instructions), otherwise it can't take the files you are ripping.
David O posted:... subfolders disappear and then reappear as before (zero bytes) when rebooted...
Mine did that too for the first few days, but the problem seems to have resolved itself. At times the Core would be visible on the finder left pane, but would not connect (no folders visible). In those cases, I connected via smb using Finder's 'Connect to server' function.
Possibly a network issue ? Have you tried rebooting your router ?
Jan
It's called the uniti core support simulator
I have used the Uniti core support simulator and have checked that the HD is configured as the the store of which it is. As previously music is certainly on the HD as I am playing it now, visible on the app but not visible as files on my mac...
File is called configuring a new music store, and then takes you through formatting the new drive, ready to accept music files, inc stating w high format you want, je WAV or FLAC
Think it maybe due to the fact the HDD is formatted for Windows but I am using a Mac, is there a way to reformat the HDD?
The internal drive on my Core is formatted to NTFS (which is designed to work with Windows IIRC).
What is yours showing (under 'Manage Music Stores') ?
Reformatting is via the 'Manage Music Stores" menu.
Jan
My is showing as NTFS, will look for reformatting now!
On your Mac, open System Preferences, Users and Groups, Login Items. Add the Music and Downloads folders to the list, then restart everything, and you should find they behave a bit better.
I had done this previously but to no avail. Does anybody know how to reformat the HDD whilst it's in the Core? I can see reconfigure but not reformat ...
Manage Music > Configure music stores > Configure music store (select the local drive to get the 'Prepare drive' header > Delete music > Format disc > Yes
(I've not gone further on mine)
Jan
Delete music...ouch have being copying the last two days....oh hum was hoping it could be done without deleting music...thanks Jan, Chrissu and CBR600 for all of your input this evening.
Well, reformatting requires deletion unfortunately, but it does seems a tad extreme here. Something tells me it's (a) a network issue or (b) a login issue. On (a) have you tried connecting the Core elsewhere on your network? On (b) have you checked off the boxes after adding the Core Downloads and Music folders to your log-in items (per Chris' post) and restarted the MacBook ?
Jan
I'm going to do the login element in the morning as I'm currently uploading. Any guidance re checking login issue and or connecting Core elsewhere on network would be appreciated. That said and be happy to be wrong it does feel like a formatting issue, however, I can recall it asking me to format other than to choose file format...but the memory is going!
Just checked by reformatting mine... there is no formatting option for the HDD. So NTFS it is.
... and weirdly, the music is still playing and the app still showing my ripped discs.
We are now entering the twilight zone...
Jan
Do you have a backup?!
Chrissu, re tried the login piece but to no avail. I have an external drive and a NAS with my collection plus the original discs so no fear of losing my music, just time and a bit of effort if I need to delete and reformat. Away for a couple of days now so hopefully one of the team from Naim will be able to asssit also. Thanks.
