Can Naim DAC Share 555PS with CD555?

Posted by: NickSeattle on 06 February 2017

Probably a silly question, but, the Naim DAC only needs half of a 555PS -- if you have a pair of 555PSs, can one of them power both a DAC and half of a CD555 at the same time, safely?  To good effect?  Cannot recall this being asked before -- must have been.

Thank you.

  • No.
  • It is not supported. The only Naim PSU supported for powering two units is the FlatcapXS.
  • Could create eath loops.

What if you can live with the earth loops or the potential that they exist?

Fear of damage to expensive gear would be the patent Naim stance, but is there a real engineering basis to this?

But if I am correct you are  not using only half the 555PS as the powerlines are mostly shared across  the two burndys apart from one low voltage line which  I think is used specifically for the CD555. Obviously the othe key thing is sharing the powersupply this way is not supported.. and as said above the ground loop potentially caused won't be desirable. Also the pinouts and the availability of voltage lines on specific pins is not the same across both burndys.

This is not supported.  You shouldn't mix an XPS Burndy and one of the 555 Burndy's on a single 555PS.  As Simon says above, the pinouts and voltage lines are not the same.

Not having tried it, I couldn't tell you what might happen if you did, but if something went bang or phut then it's on your tab.

If you have two 555PS units why not just have one on the CD555 and the other on the DAC?

Richard, looking at Nick's profile I think he's already doing that. Perhaps he was hoping to get a little extra out of the 2x555ps's. But as we say up north, you dun't get owt for nowt.

Thanks Graham.  I saw Nick's profile.  It was a rhetorical question - i.e. best keep things as they should be.

Thanks all.

If I ever do get around to trying two PSs on the CD, I will make sure the the DAC is turned off, and its XPS-Burndy is safely disconnected, then.

Joerand and I are on the same page here, btw.

I seem to recall that even using two PSs into a CD555 at all used to be "unsupported".  Maybe I am mistaken.

No mischief meant; just curious.

Thank you.

I wouldn't say it was unsupported. It's just that quite a few people here on the forum tried it and I think it was subsequently adopted by Naim on both the CD555 and NDS.

p.s. Extract from NDS manual :

Note: It is possible to power the NDS using a multiple power supply arrangement comprising two 555PS units, or a 555PS and one other compatible power supply. Contact your local Naim retailer or distributor for more information.
