importing audio files from NAS to Core
Posted by: Richard Choong on 09 February 2017
I recently got a Core and want to import my music from my NAS to the onboard HDD on the Core.
The Core is able to see the relevant folder from the Synology NAS but when I click the "import music" icon, all I see the spinning wheel but nothing gets imported. Anyone has any ideas?
Guys,
I really need help. I can't seem to import music into my core. I tried plugging in an external hdd into the front the core but no luck. While the core can see the hdd, when I try to import, nothing happens.
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?
Have you set up the internal HDD as a store?
'I presume the HDD was as per Naim's recommendation

It has been set up as a store but no the HDD isn't per Naim's recommendation. I am using a 6TB HDD but that should not matter since I have the same problem trying to import from NAS. The reason I used an external HDD is because I had the problem trying to import through a NAS. I thought using an external hdd might solve the problem. But it didn't.
Can you see the files on the external HDD on the naim app?
i presume you have gone through all of the possibilities captured on https://www.naimaudio.com/uniti-support

Nope. Can't see the files on the Naim app (how do I do this?) My store is configured for the internal drive.
I can't find any useful information from the Naim support. I am stuck at point 9 of their FAQ for "Importing Music" as my system does not show that the import began. It just shows the stupid spinning wheel.
My recollection is
go to configure store and find HDD on list of available drives
configure as store (you can switch back to your HDD easy enough)
the files should slowly load to your naim app
re uploading these to the internal drive from here I am not sure whether this is viable (haven't tried it myself)
going back to the spinning wheel this may well be down to network speed / volume of files the Core is trying to read...yesterday I found that when my broadband speed was slower and I tried to upload a larger volume of files I got the spinning wheel for 10 mins or so...
what I am doing to upload my files is placing a number of them onto my PC, public folder and uploading from there...obviously not as easy as upload all.

I don't think you can configure a hdd with music as a store. The system will ask to reformat the hdd. What I am currently doing is to manually add files to the download folder if the internal hdd. The problem is that because of the way Mac works, there is a hidden file in every folder which prevents the copying to proceed and you have to manually cut and paste every single file in any particular folder. If you have thousands of songs in multiple folders, it's a bitch.
If anyone has any ideas, do let me know.
Unfortunately There is limited Core experience as yet. Presumably yoi've conteacted your dealer and Naim support direct - you might have to waitfor them to respond, though it should be a straightforward thing they could have answered immediately...
I did. And unfortunately, they don't know either.
"The problem is that because of the way Mac works, there is a hidden file in every folder which prevents the copying to proceed"
are you talking about filenames starting with a dot?

Yup.
copy the files to a neutral file system, then use a global search/delete tool to find and kill the dot files
From the web:
For just a particular mounted volume - like a flash drive called yourUSBstick
in this example - these commands will remove existing cruft, stop Spotlight indexing now and in the future, stop the related fsevents logging, and disable the Trash feature.
mdutil -i off /Volumes/yourUSBstick
cd /Volumes/yourUSBstick
rm -rf .{,_.}{fseventsd,Spotlight-V*,Trashes}
mkdir .fseventsd
touch .fseventsd/no_log .metadata_never_index .Trashes
cd -
You use any script code at your peril.
But you will have a full backup anyway, wont you....
Thanks everyone. I found a way around it. It looks like when you want to import music, you need to put the music into a specific folder first. For those of you who had a HDX or Unitiserve you will know that there are 3 folders in the HDD. "HQ", "MQ" and "LQ". The music is found in the MQ folder. So looks like if you create the MQ folder, and put all the music into the folder, the Core has no problem reading and finding the music. Don't ask me why but it works. As I speak, my music is being downloaded!! (Finally!)
Will update here if I see any issues with the music.
Richard, glad to hear it's working for you....interestingly I can't upload that way with mine, won't let me place files in there or the downloads folde. To over come it, I placed files in the public folder of my mac and import from there.
The plot thickens from my perspective....today no drives NAS or Mac are viewable on the Naim App, however, on my mac the downloads folder now contains all I had uploaded, previously empty. So I copied files into the downloads files as per the instructions, all copied across but not viewable on the naim app. Little investigation shows that prior files had a naim metadata file whereas the ones today didn't, so something not right..re booted mac and still no drives....so later try network reboot...
Now the plot really thickens ...I checked my streamer and NAS drives were showing so not a network issue...so unplugged both Ethernet and power cable...now all drives are visible and the access to the download files has disappeared so back to previous position...odd!

In my few days with the Core and the Naim app while operating the Core has been a hit and miss. I have noticed that sometimes it lags (eg. when changing songs you select, it doesn't do so right away. It will take a few secs or sometimes require you to close the app and start it up again). Sometimes the app will just quit. Not sure if this is an app issue or how the Core interacts with the app. I have no issues with using the app with my NDX.
