NAS folder name appears as album title

Posted by: Jonn on 09 February 2017

I've a QNAP NAS with a folder called NAIM Rips which I use to store CDs ripped from an HDX. Another folder called Naim downloads is used to store downloaded music. However on the nServe app the downloaded files show the artist name but the album titles are all called "Naim downloads"  i.e. the folder name. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it?

are you using Assett on the QNAP?

Jonn,

Your profile makes no mention of an HDX in your system and you now have an NDS streamer so you should be using the naim app and not nserve (which was designed for Naim's servers only). You will need to have server software installed on your QNAP and Antony's suggestion of Asset is a good idea. Asset presents album info based on your audio files' metadata so, provided this is present and accurate, album titles and other data should show correctly in the naim app.

I still have the HDX in a second system and use it to rip CDs to the NAS which can then be played on the HDX or using the HDX as a server for the NDS. I created a music store on the NAS for the Naim rips and a folder for downloads.  The CD rips metadata is shown correctly on both the N-Serve app (HDX) and N-Stream app (NDS).

However only the artist is showing on the apps for the downloaded files, the album titles are all listed as "Naim downloads" i.e. the name of the folder in which the album is stored.

Track listings are appearing so I don't know why the album title is not showing on the apps, hence the question.

...and which app / UPnP server are you using when you are browsing the Naim_Downloads folder and seeing the artist as Naim_Downloads?

The artist name is OK it's the album title that appears as "Naim downloads". It's the same whether using the N-serve app for the HDX or the N-stream app for the NDS.

Could it be something to do with the downloads with this problem being Wav files?    I have some other downloads in the same folder transferred from another NAS that are FLAC files where the artist name and album title are shown correctly.

No album art appears for any of the downloads.

If you have untagged WAV files then it will use the filename as the track name, the folder name as the album name and the next folder name up as the artist name.

Thanks Phil. Track names and artist names are showing OK on the apps. What do I need to do to fix it so the album title is correct as well?

You need to get the HDX to convert all its rips to flac. Then it will work properly.

Once done, via the DTC, get it to transcode to wav on playback.

HH,

Jonn's problem seems to be with files which he's downloaded rather than his HDX rips.

He really needs to check the metadata on his downloaded files. If he has a PC he can use mp3tag to do this as this can now edit tags in wav files.

Yes that's correct, no problems with CD rips to WAV using the HDX.

SJ I'll have an look at mp3tag thanks.

Oops, sorry, I misread things while reading it on my phone on a bouncy bus.

Assuming that your wav files are all in individual folders under the album's title, you may be able to set up an action in mp3tag to batch complete the Album field (assuming that this is incorrect/missing).

To do this, select Action from the menu at the top of the mp3tag window and create a new action and give the action a name e.g. "Directory".  In the Actions dialog box click on the new action icon and select "Format Value" from the dropdown list. After clicking "OK" select "ALBUM" from the dropdown field list and then "directory" from the "Format string" dropdown list : Note : you will find directory in the "Information fields" sublist. Click OK to save the action (for future use) and then again to run the action.

Good luck.

PS - there is an "undo format" button if it all goes wrong!

Thanks, I'll give it a go tomorrow.

...or if you want to use dBpoweramp instead then you can use the "TagFromFilename" plugin to do the same using the folder and file names to fill in the tags.

Sounds like a neat solution, Phil although Jonn uses his HDX rather than dBpoweramp to rip his CDs and his issue is with metadata on his downloads.

Yes, as they're his 'downloads' that are affected then you could use dBpoweramp to auto tag them as you would with MP3Tag ...

Thanks for the advice, Phil. Can you use dBpoweramp's tagging plugin without having to purchase their ripping software?

It would work under the 30 day trial I would presume but beyond that you would need to buy it as it's all part of dBpoweramp.
