Looking for advice on a suitable poweramp and speakercables for NAIM DAC V1

Posted by: Bob123 on 11 February 2017

Hello,

I’m recently going from a all REGA system. I’ve kept the BRIO R intergrated amplifirer and use it for now with the NAIM DAC V1. I want to go all NAIM and is mainly thinking of trying to find a used NAP 100 poweramp. Is it something else that I should consider for approximately the same amount of money on the second hand market?

Speakers for now is a pair of old but to me nice sounding pair of NEAT Critiqe Pro. I will change them in the future but they will have to do it for now.

Then about the speakercables. First of all, I really like the NAC5 speakercable but its stiffness allready led to me breaking a pair in the past during a intensive Tunedem session (I tend to move around the speakers alot to find their best position). So I want to use something else mainly for that reason.

How about using cheaper Chord speakerscables like C-series or Sarsen for example (I allready use a Chord USB-cable and interconnect)? Would I still need atleast a 3.5M pair? I wouldn't need more than 2X2M and the gouverment is not that keen on extra speakercable laying around.

Thanks in advance.

The 100 is an ideal match. I'm confused about the speaker wires though. Why would you want to keep moving the speakers? Surely to position them in the best place in your room and then just listen to music?

Get some quality headphones.

Thanks for your reply.

It sounds good with the NAP 100 then.

About the speakerscables, I maybe expessed myself unclear. I do not move the speakers around day in and day out for fun. But I tend to do it in the beggining with a new room or if I changed something in the system.  I was sceptic in the beggining but an inch here and there can result in big changes. After that it is 100% music.  I also sadly think that a 3.5M pair of NACA5 is a total no go beacuse of the limited possibilities to hide the cable in my room.

I do not understand.

I allready listen alot to headphones. But it is never the same to me, even with good ones.

A NAP100, or NAP200 if you re feeling a little flush.

I use an old, serviced NAP140 with mine, so a used one of these or a NAP110 works a treat too.

NAP 100. Cable NACA or Chord Oydessy.

Good luck.

Nap 100 and Nordost Blue Heaven 2 speaker. Interconnect and power cables. Will sound great and get the thumbs up from the government, as they look great and are easily tractable.

TOBYJUG I do not know if you are making fun of me. I did like some Nordost-cables in the past, but they are a bit to exensive at the monent though. I will get better speakers before trying more expensive cables. Are yo using Nordost with your NAIM gear?

THE STRAT (FENDER)

Thanks. How about the leight, could I go with 2x2M Chord Odyssey or maybe even NACA5? The NAP 100 is not that sensitive to cables from what I read.

NAP 100 and Linn K20.... more flexible than NACA5. DAC V1 and Nap 100 are a wonderful combo.

I believe the Linn K20 used to be the Naim NACA4 cable.

I couldn' agree more with AM. It is the straight answer to the OP question. I would still make the effort to use NACA5, others have done it.

That Naim DacV1 + Nap 100 + Neat Critique speakers would make a super system. Only thoughts were for you to get the most out of it.

When I ran the XS integrated and cdp they responded very positively to Nordost cables. I used before that Chord Rumour biwire cables that was very good all round, but seemed a bit slow in musical focus.

I've used Chord Rumour and Odyssey before and both made the music rather boring. Tellurium Q black is very good though. I'd suspect that 3m cables would be fine but wouldn't go shorter. With NACA5 you can fold it into a sight Z fold, tie it together with a cable tie and hide it behind the system out of sight. That or TQB would be my choice.

Thanks for explaining the moving thing - I had visions of you moving them to 'tune' each album!!

I use Tellurium Q Black, which sounds great and is highly flexible!

Thanks again for all the answers.

Í know for sure with the NAP 100 now. But I am even more confused about the speakercables. I just read the referense manual and it clearly states this about loudspeaker cables:

”They should each be at least 3.5 metres long and of equal length.”

And later in the specific part for NAP 100:

”Naim Audio speaker cable will provide the best results; however, a wide range of speaker cable types can be used without risk of damage to the amplifier.”

I’ve looked for fun what a new terminated pair of 3.5m NACA 5 would cost where I live, it is over 400 GBP! That is about the same amount that my speakers costed back in the days. I could for sure be lucky and find a nice used pair, but I am still kind of chocked. My memory maybe fool me but I think that I payed somewhere around half of that some years ago. Well, well, leaning on trying the adviced Linn K20 for now, even if I would prefer to use a Chord cable because of maybe some synergy advantage of using the same brand everywhere.

Any views on Kelvin Audio K19 btw? They tend to go quite cheap, could maybe also be something?

Have a look on the auction site, or web. You can pick up used cables for sensible prices. A5 is often sold.

I would also say that good hifi has it's price. With regards the the A5 it's a VFM offer, very good at that level.

Posted on: 11 February 2017 by Bob123

@HUNGRYHALIBUT

I will look there, thanks.

@ BERT SCHURINK

You are probably right, and I tend to agree. The gain in price gives it however a bit less VFM.

It just feels strange to put almost 20% of the retail price extra on top (1400 (DAC V1) +750 (NAP 100) =2150) to be able to use their own cable that they are designed to work best with. I know it is possible to buy it cheaper on some places and that the pressentage gets alot lower when you take into account more expensive speakers. But they could maybe have a NACA light for us with more modest NAIM systems.

The 200 would need 3.5m of A5, the 100 is less fussy, what do you use now?

Where do you live?! The last time I checked, the list price of NACA5 was £32 a metre, making the cost of a 3.5m pair £224.

NAP100 and NACA5. Secondhand for both is fine.

Ting! Next question, please...

@ YETI42

Interesting, I just use something from Sommer Cable that I had laying around for now, wrong length and specfications.

CHRISSU

I live outside UK so here it is around £40/m. And then you have to pay for bananas and some pro to solder them on (I would never do it myself because it is such a importent part of the cable).  Soldering and bananas are maybe free in the UK if you buy the cable?

JON HONEYBALL

Yes, it seems like it is all covered. Still not sure about the NACA5 but have some alternatives now to.

Thanks.

plenty of well run-in naca5 out there -- no need to buy new if you can ensure the soldering of the plugs is sound

That's pretty steep! Maybe you can get some via a UK seller - you can get both used and new on that online auction site here. Naim supply the plugs for use at the amp end with their power amps, and some regular Deltron bananas for the speaker end don't cost much.
