A new mains block?
Posted by: Mike Kent on 19 February 2017
I see that Naim retailer Tom Tom Audio (one of the very best Naim dealers in my view) is singing the virtues of a new mains block with six outlets, saying it's the best block they've ever heard with Naim equipment. Not very expensive, either. I have to use a six way block so am considering the purchase. Anyone tried it yet?

Hi Mike
How much?
ayap1
There was a thread on the Matrix 2 in 2015. Might be worth a search
I use two Wireworld Mateix 2 with my Naim systems - one feeds the Olive set and the other one feeds my NDS/252/250.
They just.... work ![]()
I have two of these Matrix 2 blocks, indeed supplied by Tom Tom. All I had to compare to was the Grahams hydra these blocks replaced and they are superior (assuming you are using decent main leads - at least the standard Naim supplied cables) IMO.

Sorry, but why the tease. Surely you have more information.

Wireworld Matrix 2. Google is your friend.

So it isn't a new block then?
I found an info on the wireworld site dated 2013, but there is now a v2.
What is this quantum thingy? The only Qbase I know is the recording software ![]()
Well - at roughly 10x the price of WireWorld Matrix 2, not sure if those two distribution blocks compare at all....
Anyhow the OP asked about the Wireworld Matrix2 inhis thread.
And to confuse the thread even more. If at all possible ansus Mainz8 is worth considering. Not cheap but unlike most other blocks it has 8 plugs, important if you run an active setup or use many sources.

Crikey! At that price you could have a dedicated mains supply installed. With enough cash left over for a nice holiday!
If you go to Tom Tom to audition, I strongly advise you to listen to the Powerigel as well (assuming they still sell them - I bought mine from them). It remains the best mains block I have heard to date.
Holy s**t!!
$1,600, £1,500 - what planet are some people on?!!
To be honest, I'd struggle to justify the £120 for the poor man's power block, but these others....? Too much money combined with an addiction to snake oil.

Yes and the Grahams Hydra (looks like you can't get them new anymore). These seem to make a lot more sense (less connections, fuses etc) than these mains blocks.
So so right Tim, total madness. Its a freekin' power block, it connects plugs & sockets. OK if you go drink some distilled Arctic Viper Oil extract you can convince yourself it sounds better, if you believe that be so, then thats your business between you & your bank account.
I made my own, 3x double 13a unswitched sockets via a self designed & built DC Filter. Also a non-filtered double switched socket. The input cable connects to a 30 amp connection block to the sockets via 1.5mm PTFE twisted ring circuit on L&N & radial earth. Cost about £100 & had some fun while making it. And its made to fit perfectly - slide in & out - in my equipment rack.

I got my 8 plug Powerigel direct from Naim, but they no longer market it. Not sure Tom Tom do either, but worth a try. Muscline Germany, who developed it, sell it, but with a European plug. (Easy to swap)
I don't know if these products are snake oil, so much as just very expensive for what they provide. The £2300 Mainz8 that Claus mentions has star earthing, and some sort of mains conditioning that I won't pretend to understand, in a fancy aluminium case.
And Robin Williams used to say cocaine was God's way of letting you know you have too much money...
OTOH, (and off topic) I like Mike Kent's avatar - a reminder of what is truly important in life.
Still enjoying my RA X6 block. Does the job for me, and then some.
Hi,
while on the subject of power blocks may I ask a question.
I have 6 individual non switched Crabtree sockets for my black boxes on a non dedicated ring main.I am using clearer audio silverline power leads.
Would it be better to use a good quality mains block with only 1 power lead connected to my ring main and my black boxes plugged into the mains block.?
or
Leave it the way it is.

How about the Powerigel Plus then? It may be interesting to know the latest views on it. Several of us have so many PLs that it may not hurt them that much to trade them in for this very special mains block. ![]()

Star earthing is as I understand it the most important factor, but you will really just have to audition. In my last house I upped the earth tails, installed a recommended dedicated consumer unit, a dedicated spur using fat-as-hell cables to Crabtree sockets etc and it made not a jot of difference to sound quality...
