Music & Hi-Fi Evening in support of the RNLI

Tuesday 28th February.  Please come along and support the RNLI!  A memorable evening with a selection of vinyl and high res music to suit most tastes.  A very top of the range Naim hifi system will be used, with Chord Music cables, Dynaudio speakers etc.  All in aid of the lifeboats. Spoke to the Dynaudio people at Bristol and they are very excited about this. They had a great sound there with NDS/252/300 so it should be awesome - wish it was closer to me!

Enjoyed the music evening. it's not often you have a chance to hear a system like the one set up. I couldn't believe how big the Statement amps are. Also the tower of Dynaudio speakers and the amount of Chord cabling was amazing. For the vinyl part I was near the front off to the left and the sound was good. After the break I moved to the back and centre  standing up and the streaming was a lot better.

Listening to live acoustic Nils Lofgren was amazing. I had to come home and buy the music.

Having been fortunate to win one raffle price and the then another on the same strip was a bit lucky. I decided to re-raffle the second as I didn't want to be greedy...

It was good to help the RNLI charity, a big  thank you to all who set this and supported the evening.

A taste of what you guys missed !!

The hall was about 60' x 24' x 15' with something like 100 people in attendance...........Bristol, eat your heart out !!

As Dean says, the first part was vinyl driven and sounded good, although Mrs D felt the top-end was a bit harsh and the bottom end a bit "boomy" (her words)

The second part was streamed and was bloody amazing !! Talk about Fever, Time and Money !! And i'm sure Chris enjoyed Maria Callas - we did.

Ok the set up would set you back the wrong side of £250k, plus £10 for your first record, but for this price you get Elvis, Pink Floyd and Maria in your house whenever you want.

It was great to meet Chris and Malcolm too. Didn't meet Dean, but we know who you are - double raffle winner !!!

Chris, many thanks for setting this up and posting details here. I hope the RNLI had a successful collection.

And many thanks to Naim, Dynaudio, Chord, Hundreds Records and Audio-T for being so generous with their time and equipment. Especially Mark, whose choice of music was so much better than Doug's (sorry Doug if you are watching....your's wasn't as bad as others have made out !)

Thanks, Don for posting  pictures.  I haven't yet worked out how to do it!  It was good to meet you and your wife last night and I'm pleased you enjoyed the evening.  It was also great to meet other Forum members NewNaim16 and lapman - please remind me if I've failed to mention anyone I met. 

A really big THANK YOU to all at Naim, Chord Company, AudioT, and Dynaudio for taking so much time and trouble in bringing such an impressive sound system.  I know there was a lot of preparation involved.  The sound system was something else!  We don't yet have final figures, but a first count takes the profit for the RNLI to the £1,000 mark, and the final figure should slightly exceed this sum.  I expect to know the exact total early next week and will post it on the Forum.  Official RNLI letters will go to the companies involved separately. Again thanks to all for attending and  for helping the lifeboats.  Chris G, wearing my RNLI hat! (or should that be sou'wester?)

I also add thanks to Mark from Hundred Records, his vinyl contribution to part one was enjoyed by all.  I hope he did well with sales, and that people who didn't know Hundred Records before will visit his shop!

It was a great evening, thanks Chris G for organising it. Mrs NewNaim16 and myself both had a good time and were very pleased to be able to support the RNLI. Agreed that the streaming session was particularly impressive. We tried a few of the same tracks on our own system and somehow it wasn't quite the same but then we didn't pay £250k!

Mrs D also thought the bass was "boomy" during the vinyl session.

Given the streaming session didn't exhibit that "boomyness" I put it down to the turntable. It struck me that in such a fine system, the source needs to be pristine, otherwise the amps, cables and speakers reveal the source weaknesses. The NDS delivered the goods IMHO. Getting a balanced system isn't easy. NDS/Power @ £15k, amps at c.£150k, speakers @ £60k, cables at £freak-out!! plus Fraim and power blocks.......anything shy of £15k at the source end is going to let the side down !

Mind you, next time we have a party at home, we are going to commission Chris to sort out the music side of things

I don't know Chris. I didn't see any "black boxes" other than Naim so i'm guessing that the power supply and phonostage were Naim, but as for the arm and cartridge, i'm afraid I really didn't look. Mrs D was with me and I didn't want to appear too "geeky" ................

Unfortunately, I don't think the two pictures I took, reveal any more detail than can be seen above.

No two ways about it though. For whatever reason, the streaming route was streets ahead of the vinyl route, at least in Mrs D's opinion, and I never contest that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christopher_M:  I don't know the answers to your questions.  I have asked and will let you know when I have some information.

Thank you both. As a bit of a vinylista, it's just that I'm not fond of the idea of the vinyl sound being so apparently trumped.

My hope was that a Gyro with SME V, Koetsu, HR psu for dc motor, SuperLine and SCDR etc. might have it approaching Don's notional £15K

The main thing is that lots of you had a good evening of music in a decent setting and raised a bit of money too.
