Music & Hi-Fi Evening in support of the RNLI
Posted by: NaimAudio on 21 February 2017
Audio T Southampton will be assisting the RNLI to host a charity Music & Hi-Fi evening with support from key manufacturers, Naim Audio, Dynaudio and The Chord Company and the local independent record store Hundred Records.
Join us at The White Horse Hotel in Romsey on 28th February at 7.30 pm to experience our reference amplification system, Statement. This will be a unique opportunity to listen to an exceptional Hi-Fi system in a comfortable and spacious venue whilst supporting one of the most vital and highly valued charities, the RNLI.
Tickets £10, bought in advance are available via Audio T, Hundred Records, or from RNLI tel 01794 323602 or email romseylifeboats@yahoo.co.uk.
Chris,
Remember, the venue was a large hall. You can see about one quarter to one third of it in my first photo. And it had a high ceiling. There were about 10 rows of seats behind me and then another 20 to 25 ft of space To fill that hall with good music was no mean feat. But my guess is that the volume control was turned up a tad too much for the vinyl to cope, with resultant distortion most noticeable, as usual, at the top and bottom ends of the spectrum.
I don't have any streaming devices (yet) but I was mighty impressed with the streamed music last night. And somewhat deflated (like you) that the old vinyl seemed somewhat muted and distorted by comparison.
The real purpose of the evening was for Chris G to get us to hand over our cash for a real worth-while cause. And a blooming ingenious way it was too. We enjoyed it, and I honestly think the "providers" ie Naim et-al enjoyed it too !
Don,
Remember that I'm local and I know the hall at the White Horse!

I'm so pleased you all had a good time, and to raise over £1,000 for the RNLI is fantastic. I was really keen to come to this, but still can't drive and it was too much of an imposition to ask Hilary to drive after a day at work. I'd never go to a Hifi show, but this sort of low key event sounds really good. It's a super thing to do, and well done to all the organisers and companies involved.
HH - If you had let me know you were keen to go I would have picked you up ! ?
Re: turntable :
Pretty sure it was superline HC
Thanks for all the various comments. I am happy to try and find out some more information. I confess my interest is not in vinyl so I took less notice of that side of proceedings than perhaps I should, hence my need to seek answers to Christopher_M's questions - I'm happy to do this. I felt with the growing following for vinyl that we should have it represented - filling the first half of the programme.
The purpose, as clearly understood, was to raise funds for the RNLI and indications are now that the final figure will be significantly above the £1,000 first mooted. Our aim in setting up the event was, in return, to provide a pleasurable evening for the audience - I think from comments we may have succeeded. We are absolutely delighted with the money raised and very grateful to the generosity of everyone involved, from those paying to hear music, to those providing it. Everyone worked very hard behind the scenes to make the evening a success and I am truly humbled by the goodwill shown to the lifeboats. The sound system most certainly filled the very large hall - I heard parts from the very back of the long room as well as from the front, and it was the kind of system most of us can only aspire to, but as Alan Gibb of Chord Company pointed out, we were listening to the "Formula One of hi-fi" and development at the top in time filters down! How many years before we can all afford amplication of Statement quality? It's been an absolute pleasure to work with people from all the companies involved.
HH - sorry you weren't able to come, but I hope you are progressing well.

Ah, I didn't realise you knew that particular venue !, but the description might have helped others appreciate what the system had to cope with.

That's very kind, but it would have been took much to ask. Hopefully I'll get my licence back next month so will be more mobile. I'll just gave to eat extra cake at the next RNLI cake sale here in Emsworth.
The idea of doing this sort of thing for such a good cause is just great, and do much nicer than a purely commercial venture, though of course I hope all the companies involved get a benefit.
The information requested as follows: the turntable was a Michell Gyro SE with Mitchell Tecnoarm A, and Michell HR power supply. The cartridge was a Dynavector 20X2L low output moving coil. Superline and Supercap on the turntable. The NDS with 555 power supply, and Statement pre-amp with two Statement power amps. This information from Audio T and Naim.
Thanks for finding out.

We have now finished counting, and I am absolutely delighted to announce that the total raised for the lifeboats from this wonderful evening is £1,300. SIncere and grateful thanks to Naim, Chord Company, Dynaudio, Audio T and Hundred Records for their hard work and help. It has been very worthwhile. A warm thank you to everyone for their generosity in supporting the lifeboats and raising such a wonderful total. Also thank you to the White Horse Hotel for so kindly hosting the event. Must do it again sometime......
