CD5XS new model replacement?

Posted by: Mikeaudio1 on 21 February 2017

Looking at Naim product history, it looks like their digital products are upgraded on average, every 4-5 years.  The CD5XS has been in production for 7 years.  Is a replacement player on the horizon?

I would be very surprised if Naim ever produce another new dedicated CD Player as they seem to think the future is streaming.

I would be surprised too. The CD5 XS is a very good and accomplished CDP that offers multiple upgrade possibilities with external PSU and nDAC. Note that the 5 series has been updated on a more frequent basis with the 5i, 5i (italic) and 5si. :)

Dealers I've visited lately no longer stock Naim CDPs, have a display model on the floor, or a demo CDP to try at home. Until a couple of years ago I'd take a CD with me to hear on a Naim system, now the dealer hands me an i-pad. I'd say the current line-up of Naim CDPs it for posterity. There are a number of other manufacturers still updating their CDPs on a regular basis, from basic to very hi-end.

I concur with the iPad story. I always visit dealerships with one or two USB sticks with my favorite 16 and 24bits downloads for listening tests.   :)

Same here.

A new CDP would probably be a complete re-design around the Teac mechanism in the Uniti.   Not likely I guess.

I do wonder though if as and when the current CDPs cease production they might produce a stand alone high-end transport to meet a niche market

Lindsay

Not sure if there would be the market for it ... but perhaps they will build a ND5XS replacement with a built in ripper / transport - a Uniti Star wit its amplification removed.

Many of us have large CD collections.  Although most of my new music purchases are in  high res download these days, I do need ongoing ability to play CDs.  I guess as long as Naim can service and repair, then the immediate future is taken care of.  It would be unfortunate if the CD (for all its faults) became obsolete - though I suspect and hope that will be some years hence.
