DAC V1 + 282
Posted by: DanT87 on 23 February 2017
Been bitten by the Naim bug fairly badly and am already looking at another upgrade for my 250dr.
Currently it is fed by my V1, some people I have spoken to share the view that the V1 is out weighed and not up to the job of feeding the 250dr properly and that a 282 would be excellent with it.
What I would like opinions and comments on is if it's possible to feed the 282 by the V1 in fixed output just handling the conversion via the asynchronous USB and if it can, is this a good way of doing things?
Or is there a better/different way?
Thankyou all
Audirvana is reputed to achieve sound quality on a par with the very best available, although as with any computer-based source that is very much subject to how it is set up. Audirvana gives very good information on how to optimise, including using a dedicated usb bus, avoiding using the Mac's own soundcard, and minimising anything else running. But one thing Audirvana doesn't discuss is Rf isolation of the computer if using a DAC that doesn't have adequate isolation of its inputs, which can be very significant to achieving good quality.
I found Audirvana's sound quality to be better than an ND5XS into Hugo (RF isolated with a Gustard U12, through MF P270 power amp into IMF RSPM speakers), and in a quick comparison indistinguishable from Melco N1A into Dave (through Bryston 4B SSD2 power amp into PMC Fact12 speakers).
My DAC V1 works super in combination with the 250 DR......,, I installed a Chord signature tuned aray interconnect which is a not too expensive serious sound improvement.....
I ordered chord sig tuned aray today, I hope they are good
they are not cheap Tough!
They don't seem cheap to me either...
anyone have any thoughts on streaming to the V1 for example through a bluesound node 2 on Tidal? Would bypass the DAC in the node 2 but get the benefit of MQA audio through the app.
That said, I understand it to be 24/96 not the whole 192 I would get if using the DAC in the node 2.
I am using a sonos connect (Chord prodac coax cable) with the V1 and I love the sound. FLAC is the limit of course so no high res but I love the sound :-). I have no experience with the Bluesound node but I imagine it will sound even better than my sonos.

I presume your limitation is the Sonos, as flac is quite capable for hi res.

Maybe best see the threads on MQA - it is far from clear that it will bring better sound if you have a decent system, though in lesser systems it seems some people perceive the different sound as an improvement (however my observation here is not personal experience as I seek my hi res without lossy compression)
DANT87, in case you fancy a (used) nDac and USB want to connect devices via USB:
iPhone/iPad can be connected directly to the nDac USB slot and even controlled via nDac buttons and remote.
For computer USB out you need an USB-SPDif converter. The Dac V1 has this technology built in, it's licensed from Audiophilleo. I use Audiophilleo+PurePower as standalone devices to connect my laptop to the nDac and I'm really satisfied. There are other USB converters out there, the AP+PP being the best I heard so far.
P. - thanks for your reply. I have considered the ndac strongly and have not ruled it out. My one reservation I have with it is that you need a converter to spdif, which I guess is fine but I just don't like adding too much stuff like that to the chain if that makes sense. That being said, it is one of my only options if I decide to change the V1.
Or the more expensive options of 272 and 282...and the power supplies to follow.
I like the DAC V1 because it has the asynchronous USB input which works really nice with my MacBook, Tidal and subsequently Tidal masters. Even though I get the V1 is not MQA enabled so only see the first gain (if you can call it that but it does sound good to me, softer) to me 24/96 is a step above Tidal HiFi but that's another story altogether right!?
That being said, I need to damn well upgrade the firmware on the V1, I understand it makes a nice improvement from all that I have read here.
