Connecting a 2Tb HDX to Netgear ready 314
Posted by: SteveHathway on 23 February 2017
Guys, I've just bought my HDX, brilliant kit, but I wish to back up to the Netgear ready nas 314. I have basic comp knowledge . Can one of you kind Naim boffins do me a dummies guide to this process please . Thank you
The HDX side is pretty much covered in the manual if you read it carefully, but first, you need to set up the NAS. Synology and QNAP are more popular here, not that there's anything wrong with ReadyNas, but if you don't get a response from a ReadyNas user here, I'd suggest you contact Naim support by phone or email. They are good at this stuff, and will be able to get you up and running.
If you do not have user restrictions on the nas, setting it up should be simple. The old Duo v2 nas line has a share called media and a backup share created automatically. If the 314 firmware works in the same way these 2 shares should be visible to the hdx, and can be used as a backup store one of them since this deletes all files, and the media share can be used to hold downloaded music, unless you want to use the internal download share on the hdx itself.
The 2 simplest way to setup the nas most importantly to create a backup location is to either use the hdx internal webpage with flash, or to use the desktop client that you need to install. The desktop client is available both for Windows and mac but Windows is probablby the best solution.
You may even be able to do these tasks from the touch screen of the hdx, but I am not sure, however this should be explained in the hdx manual.

You have another option. Don't store music on the HDX.
The NAS can be mirrored and backed up without any fear of your collection being lost somewhere inside the HDX and only recoverable by the factory. This is how I ran my HDX with a two bay ReadyNAS. I spent some time ripping and playing back from internal HDD and NAS and found no difference. Likewise, something ripped using dBpoweramp on a PC and placed in a network share didn't sound any different through my HDX on my system.
The HDX is a good X level streamer, capable of being an good X level CDP and incorporating other useful facilities besides. Putting all my music inside it always struck me as a bit risky, or rather pointless if backed up elsewhere. A NAS is very easy to maintain, backup, upgrade and scale. And to replace. I run QNAPs now after a ReadyNAS Duo box failed, accompanied by a nasty smell. Both disks were spiked in the process.
Just a thought. That's part of the beauty of ripping and streaming. You can pretty much set up to suit your own preferences without sacrificing sound quality.
