Flatcap xs & 202 pre

Posted by: Ivanhoe71 on 08 March 2017

New to Naim,...advanced apologies...

Have 200/202 power/pre, the pre powered by 200 & a Napsc. Just bought a Flatcap xs and now curious if both the Flatcap xs and Napsc should/could still be connected simultaneously...I ask because Naim sent me a diagram of a 200/202/Hicap/Napsc stating Hicap & Flatcap are interchangeable.....which begs the question, what purpose is each doing? And what cables should I be using?

Be grateful for useful advice...

P.S. Flatcap xs v Hicap? Opinions?

The napsc powers the front panel and switching, so leave it connected. With a 202 it's a Hicap you want. The flatcap will be little better than powering the 202 with your 200. To connect it up, just follow the diagram in the 202 manual.

Hi Ivan - Yes they should.

Powered from a 200, the 200 supplies a single 24v power rail to the 202. SNAIC4 between 202 and 200

The NAPSC is the first upgrade which powers the logic and control circuitry on the Preamp separately - uses cable attached to NAPSC with its 2 pin plug (remove upgrade 1 link)

The Flat / Hicap upgrade replaces the single 24v rail from the 200 with two 24v rails from the power supply. SNAIC5 between CAP and 202, SNAIC4 between CAP and 200 (remove upgrade link 2)

Hope that helps

James

Big help, many thanks...leads to another question...can I use the Flatcap XS (or a future hicap) to power the headline I have, or is that from a napsc only?

The flatcap will power the headline. I think you'd need a slic lead, but not entirely sure.

HH is right - a SLIC cable is what you need to connect the Headline to a Naim Power Supply.

From the website, Headline is:

Designed for use with NAPSC, FlatCap XS, HiCap or SuperCap power supply

I once had a Headline with a (pre-DR) HiCap. Very fine.

Funny I was going to ask that very same question!

Have a 202 / napsc /200 on home demo will try hooking up flatcap xs

I'd also try the 202/ 200 just with the Napsc. I preferred it that way than with a FC too. A HiCap is a different matter. An opinion only. All that matters is yours.

Which source(s) do you have?

The answer might also depend on which 200 you use. The newer 200DR has an uprated DR power supply to the preamp. I suspect this further weakens the argument for adding a Flatcap (although I haven't done the comparison myself) and has the advantage of keeping the box count down. Maybe something for the OP to consider, too.

Sondek + Ekos + Koetsu Red through a Cyrus phono stage with psx-r.

^ The Cyrus is highly respected but is it synergetic with Naim?

Rather than fret about a ps for the 202 I'd want to address this first, especially if vinyl was my only source. A SuperLine powered from Aux2 is the obvious suggestion. And even better if you power the NAC with a HC-DR, no doubt.

Yes, aiming to do that, but with a stageline.  Though perhaps you can answer this; My Koetsu has 0.4mV output/30ohm impedance, Naim say I need an E version, my local dealer says an S version.

Any thoughts?

I know who I'd believe.

A forum search reveals that the E version is right for cartridges with 1mV output....

Very happy with my Stageline S on a cartridge which has 0.3mV output.

i had a few years ago a koetsu black with stageline s. I had a hicap to power it . But after i found that the tom evans microgroove was better, and for less money( around 1500 eur).

But i have not heard the superline....
