Uniti Atom vs Nova

Posted by: dave-mac on 10 March 2017

I'm wondering what, if any, are the differences are between the Atom and the Nova, apart from the latter having twice the wattage? It seems the rest of the components are identical, so theoretically they should sound more or less the same at similar volumes - would that be correct?

The difference will not just be power. The Nova likely has a much better pre-amp section as well, but Naim don't really talk about it in the specs. Just like how the Superuniti was much more than just a more powerful Qute.

The Atom that I am currently listening to is clearly superior to the Qute, and is currently driving a pair of Totem Acoustic Sttafs. I would not have paired these loudspeakers with a Qute, as the Qute always struggled to drive them.

I personally am holding out for a Nova, i can't wait to hear what it can do!

Based on a demonstration of the two a few months ago with Focal Sopra 1 speakers, the Atom does very well indeed for a £1600 or so all-in-one but the Nova is demonstrably more capable at driving & controlling a speaker such as the Sopra 1.

Just as a NAP140 has the same house sound as a NAP250, so an Atom has the same house sound as a Nova.  But that does not make the two equivalent.  No surprise really, given the difference in price.  The Atom is remarkably capable but the Nova is so very much more so.

Hope this helps, FT

putting muscle aside - which one  is the 'sweeter' sounding amp between Qute and Atom ? Music 'smoothness, timing & flow' = lack of harsh/hardness,  'breath of life' reproduction?

Today the Atom has received a firmware update. That coupled with the addition of a Powerline appear to have launched this thing into orbit. It has now well exceeded the Qute in PRAT, and there's definitely extra detail coming through. It's like it was previously driving with the handbrake on a little, and now someone's taken it off completely. Absolutely blown away by what this little box can do!

I wonder where you have got your atom from

Naim of course!

It's a demo unit that's going to be traveling around the dealers down here, just lucky enough to get to play with it first!

Until these devices are released, any commentary on SQ has to be taken with caution, because they are likely to change and evolve with updated firmware and even internal tweaking. I have heard a prototype Nova at Naim, but I was advised to understand it was a prototype and I shouldn't expect the final released Nova to neccessarily perform exactly like that... incredibly good though it was.

You are a trade member then?

I work for a retailer on the underside of the globe, so I guess I'm currently an undocumented trade member? I should probably be tagged as a trade member really, I'm guessing Richard Dane can do this for me?

Anyways back on topic, the Atom is showing great promise, and I can't wait for the Nova to blow me away!

J, assuming you're working for a Naim dealer, I will change your title when I get back home and back on a computer - have just been to hear the RPO play at Cadogan Hall in London, which was wonderful as ever..

[@mention:26908937807116029] Have you tried spotify connect with the atom yet? If so, do track listings and album art appear on the screen?

I'm also very interested in finding out the answer to this... Will we get album artwork on the new Uniti's screen from Tidal and Spotify?

Sadly I only tried it with upnp for the brief amount of time that it was available to me. It has now moved on to another store.

I also tend to not use Spotify connect on anything that ends up on the shop floor due to the way that Spotify connects to devices, as every box that you have connected your Spotify account to is stored and can be accessed at anytime from anywhere. Rather disconcerting when a box randomly fires up in the shop because a customer is trying to play music at home and Spotify has auto connected to it! And when the volume suddenly increases to max...

That's very interesting news indeed

forgive me for asking but Atom supposed to have a lite version of a power line. Please explain why you added another powerline. The light version provided not good enough or am I missing something?

Currently there is no 'Powerline' mains plug for AUS/NZ. Instead we use a 'tapon' style mains plug. We see a benefit from the Powerline due to the floating IEC plug at the other end of the cable, which the Powerline Lite doesn't have.
