Next thing up from Muso Help please

Posted by: Don Jay on 11 March 2017

Hi,
Can you kindly help me choose my next product/s as I'm confused what I need now.

I currently have a Naim Muso, in bedroom. I would like to buy the next stage up from Muso for my living room.

I'm looking for a similar high def clear quality as my Muso but would like it in 2 speaker setup but with same abilities as now. I use Tidal on the Apple IOS app. I don't need it to be much louder so not looking at massive speakers, but would need to be able to both stream AND also now to have stereo separation (2 separate speakers). I'm looking for plug and play type system if possible. of course I would like to stay with Naim as I'm hooked but don't really need (or wish to spend crazy amounts) on the large speakers. Just more or less recreate my Muso but in wider stereo.
Thanks,

Don

If you can wait a few months one of the new Uniti players should do what you want.

One of the new Uniti players, as mentioned, coupled with some good quality bookshelf speakers will be perfect for you.

I use a Naim Uniti 2 and love it in my living room with my Dynaudios. The newer Star would be similar, and should power plenty different speakers.

I use it for tv, movies and music. I can use Tidal, play CDs, Internet radio, stored music in my Mac mini, absolutely an awesome unit. Optical/coax inputs allow the use of cable box, xbox1S and blu-Ray player.

Essentially: UnitiQute or silimar from the new Uniti range. Add some KEF LS50 and you are in business.

At this stage you may start exploring the world of high-resolution downloads and install a dedicated NAS....

Thanks all. So, looking at what's out now, if I get a UnitiQute with 2x LS50 will that compare well to a Muso quality hi def hifi sound but with better sound separation?  Are Naim speakers needed considering the price I see them which is wway too much for me? Finallly is there any reason to wait for the Uniti range to come out as I don't understand what the main differences are for what I will be trying to achieve if I get a uniqute now. I'm not sure if worth waiting as pricing is not shown yet and to be honest there are a few Uniti coming out so I don't know what one I will need anyway for my setup (a hifi quality stereo version of the Muso playing Tidal from the iOS app on AirPlay). Thanks guys.

If you want to use Airplay, you are best to get the new uniti range as unitiqute does not include it. It depends on if you have time to wait. The new Uniti range is due in April/May but by then will be almost six months late. So obviously there is a risk attached that you could be waiting far longer as Naim months are not measurable in conventional time.

The Uniti Atom replaces the UnitiQute 2. The UK Price for a Uniti Atom is £1750. You will certainly get a Unitiqute 2 for less, perhaps much less if you are happy to take a used one. If you add a pair of loudspeakers, which certainly don't need to be made by Naim, then you will hugely out perform the Mu-so.

if you are buying a used Unitiqute 2 then you need to make sure it has Bluetooth as this was a fairly recent addition and many UQ2s out there won't have Bluetooth and so won't do Aurplay.

Having just "down graded" the kitchen system from a Uniti + kef LS50 speakers to a Mu-So QB i feel inclined to throw my 2p in.

I disagree that a unitiqute 2 and say a pair of  speakers would "hugely outperform th Mu-So". I would say you're going to be bumping up against the area of diminishing returns behond the Mu-So and any advance in sound quality is going to depend on external factors as well as the system itself.

You need to be careful about the type of speakers you pair the system with, as I found my original setup a bit light on bass without a sub.   Will a £1750 + 800 quid pair of speakers sound "better" than a Mu-So? Probably, yes, but how much better is the question.

If you will be considering the new uniti range and require small speakers maybe check out Neats new iota alpha which are tiny floor standers and are reportedly very good.

Well... it is about diminishing returns to scale, isn't it?

So will the Muso perform better than with Uniti and ksl50 at least on clear bass?

No of course it won't.  it won't perform better in any respect except using less space and costing less money. But go and listen at a dealer and make your own mind up.

I would personally look into more speakers then the LS50. A good speaker sure, but they are light in the bass, IMO. Monitor Audio Silver 1, Dynaudio Emit 10 or Excite X14, Dali Opticon 1, Totem speakers, Sonus Faber speakers are other options as well. I'm sure you can come across more. Listen to as much as you can and decide what's best for you.

Thank you all. Very helpful. Only way to do it is to listen, I don't want to get buyers remorse with the lse50 just in case bass is too low. Any recommendations on a store that friendly and would let me try some out. I live in north london. Thank you.

Plese remember that you will most likely have a 'problem' with most book-shelf speakers and their perceived bass extention. this is just pure physics...

Hi Adam. Very helpful, but as I don't have a problem with the Naim Muso bass as it's just right for me as I'm not a hophopper but naim got it right with the Muso the only thing wrong with it is it's one piece and not two. I swear 2 musos in a stereo pair would have been perfect for me

so anyway, would bookshelves actually go down a notch on base from the lovely rounded base on the Muso, so, will I need to shell out extra for also a subwoofer of some sort too if I go the pair route?

UnitiQute does have a small 'cheat' piece of software to help with the perceived bass  - there is a 'loudness' setting and 'speaker size' setting  (small / large). Essentially it adjusts the output of the UnitiQute to cope with various listening volume settings smaller or larger speakers.
The assumption was (I guess) that UnitiQute is more likely to be hooked up with various speakers, rather than it's larger siblings like SuperUniti (which are perfect for floor-standing speakers).

My advice is to listen to various speakers and see what you like. Avoid the subwoofer root, as it takes some skill to successfully integrate a subwoofer with stereo speakers.

This sounds like an ideal situation for a good Naim dealer to do some work for you. Look up dealers on the Naim website and enquire about your needs and wether said dealer has any experience with the new unity products that might have been heard at the trade shows recently. If they can set up a Muso in a similar environment, then run you through what else they have, and more importantly if they think it's worth holding out for the new products.
