Downloads, n-Serve/App and Newest
Posted by: Richard Morris on 11 March 2017
I buy a download, run it through Metadatics and add to the Downloads folder.
Sometimes the music appears in the 'Newest' section of n-Serve or App, sometimes it doesn't. Any idea why?
I presume you are reffering to the UnitiServe UPnP functionality?
All new downloads should appear there. Do they appear correctly under the artist / album / genre etc?
On the whole, I've found my Unitiserve to be trouble free and very simple to use, but it does occasionally have it's quirks. The last played and newest lists should, you would think, be identical on the N-Serve and Naim apps, but they often aren't. They are normally correct on the N-Serve app, but wrong in the Naim app.
I have a set of albums I downloaded a few months ago, and edited in Metadatics. For a couple of weeks, most of them showed only the first 1 or 2 tracks when viewed through any Naim interface, but viewing them through a web browser, they were all there. Then, the tracks suddenly became visible for no obvious reason. I also edited one of the album titles, as I mis-spelt it and went back to Metadatics to correct it. My original spelling mistake stubbornly persists to this day if I view the album through any Naim interface, despite the fact that if I view the folder in OSX Finder or Metadatics, the correct spelling is there.
In my experience, these anomalies are rare enough to ignore are mere quirks of an otherwise robust setup - if they happened all the time, I would be looking for an alternative bit of hardware.
Forcing a rescan via the DTC should sort these little quirks out.
Always worth a try, but in my case, it made no difference to the issues I mentioned above!

Yes, US. They all appear in the artist/album/genre lists.

Sorry, what's the DTC?

If you're a Mac user, you will be using the OSX N-Serve app to do a rescan. The DeskTop Client is a PC interface.
When I had a uServe, every once in a while this happened to me -- something newly added to the Downloads didn't show up in 'Newest.'

Richard - if you use a Mac, I can send you detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to force a re-scan of the SHARE folder (this is where the downloads should be placed).

Thanks Adam, I do use a Mac. That would be helpful. You have emailed me before with Synology set-up instruction so should have my address.

Indeed I will prepare something for you shortly.
[@mention:55630933166440349]: just emailed the instructions to you.

Thanks Adam, rescan complete but it doesn't seem to have made any difference. The Newest tab still has the same albums - nothing new.
I noticed that I have lots of Hosts in the Network shares section which seem to be Naim based, like AUDIOTWO/AUSTIN-PC/BOB/DJTECHDIRECT-PC/JOHNT-PC/OFFICE2/OLIVER-PC/OWEN/PAULCROUCH/SALES-PC/T450PC/USER-1-PC/WORK2-PC. Can these be removed?

You can remove them but they'll repopulate. Just ignore them; they aren't effecting anything.

If your US has been on any network and scanned it for available drives, it will list them as network shares. Mine has 15 or so, which it has found on visitors laptops or on my dealers network, and they stay on the list unless you remove them. If they annoy you, just get rid of them, but I don't think they do any harm.

Yes, you can - if you don't recognise them.
By the looks of it your UnitiServe was also used on a different network at some stage (your dealer, Naim service???). UnitiServe retains, in its memory, all networks and shares it ever scanned.
Thanks, removed. The dealer had the US for a while to try and replicate the 'offline' problem I had (and still have).
