Another Cable Question

Posted by: Bob the Builder on 11 March 2017

I'm getting a bit frustrated at limited amount of RCA - Din cables available in my price point (sub 150 pounds used are fine), I know Naim and most forum members would advise against it but has anyone had any success with RCA - RCA plug interconnects. The cables are to be used to connect my Trichord Dino Phono Stage to my 282.  I do have one of those Mayware adapter things If people think that would help, I have previously used Flashback, Chord Chrysalis and am now using Chord Crimson. I am a great believer in cables as the biggest jumps in SQ have always come when connecting new cables.

I never tried it myself but outside Naim the finest systems on earth use RCA - RCA connections too so I can't imagine you won't be able to get good results with it?

At sub £150 I doubt you'd improve on the Chord Crimson.  How much is the Shawline?

Bob , I have a Lavender RCA-DIN that I used initially from Hugo to Pre which was fine . In a similar predicament to you I added a Tellurium Q Black RCA-RCA , this was significantly better and easily justified its £285 price tag . When I sold mine I think I got around the £150 mark so a used one could be an option . I now use a TQ Black diamond RCA which is very very good and was at a really good price . I have a few TQ cables and have always got a good discount .

When I was trying out different interconnects I emailed Naim about this, they said that whilst DIN is always preferable , it can be "cable" dependant .

I certainly wouldn't be deterred from trying out cables just because there's no DIN option , especially at your price point .

The AR Sound GreenLink is also worth considering although at £170 it's just above your target maximum.

Bob, as Pete suggests, it is cable dependant in my experience. Although the DIN version of the same cable has sounded better to me, a better RCA-RCA cable will still win. For me I switched from a Chord Chorus Reference RCA-DIN to a Tellurium Q Black RCA-RCA which was an all round improvement. At £150 s/h for the TQ Black RCA-RCA I would say it's quite a steal.
