Tidal NDX drop outs. Any fix?

Posted by: Cheekymonkey71 on 12 March 2017

Hi all.

My new NDX is sounding wonderful, but the drops outs when streaming Tidal tiresome. I'm using a brand new BT Home Hub 5, wifi connection to the NDX. Will a hard wired connection help? Keen to get any feedback before I start drilling holes all over the place.

Interestingly, my old NDX didn't suffer with this.  That was wifi connected too albeit to an older Home hub 3. Had to change the 3 because it was unreliable with all our other tech at home

thanks in advance

Its a difficult one, the current Naim streamer firmware is very latency sensitive with Tidal, with increased latency anywhere in the network path and server response time increasing the chance of the receive buffer emptying. Replacing wifi with Ethernet should reduce the effective latency a bit, so might improve things but won't neccessarily always resolve the dropouts.

i assume you have the basics covered like sufficient throughput on your wifi connection...

Interestingly, I changed the channel settings on the router last night, and tough wood it appears to have sorted things out.......!

I'd understood that Tidal drop-outs were a known issue, which would be addressed in the next firmware update?

It depends on the cause of the TIDAL dropouts - the next firmware has changes in it that will help in the situation that there is excessive latency between your network and the TIDAL servers but issues can be caused by many things.

In this instance it should be remembered that changing WiFi channel may only bring temporary respite - if that particular channel starts to get heavy traffic on it (from other surrounding networks) and you have fixed the channel that your router is working on then you are likely to see the same issues occurring again.
