Cheap temporary USB cable for DAC-V1
Posted by: GTIgor on 14 March 2017
Hello!
My DAC-V1 is connected currently to PC using extremeley cheapish Belkin printer cable.
I had luck to try Kubala-Sosna Temptation. Despite being very skeptic about USB connection importance - the SQ improvement was astonishing! Comparable going from Xonar STX internal sound card to DAC-V1. The difference in sound is truly amazing.
I am not really keen to spend that much on USB cable (but need to listen to different others too) and more importanly I want to add Sonore MicroRendu to the system which uses its oqn short SUB adaptor instead of cable (it sounds great as people say). So no real need for a super expensive USB cable.
Which USB cable (around $50-100) would you reccomend to my DAC V1 + Nait 5i + Espos ES25 combo as temporary solution until I get the MicroRendu?
Try the basic Chord USB cable. I think it's called Silverplus.

+1. Excellent value and works well.
I used a Chord Silver from my PC to DAC-V1, not long ago. Sound was very good. Also works perfectly, at up to 5 meters long.
I'd also recommend running Fidelizer on your PC. It made a very noticeable improvement to my system. A small cat sitting on my DAC-V1, made no discernible difference to the music [

Another vote for the the Chord SilverPlus.
Tricky stuff- results probably depend on what you are connected to on the source side! You could try the Belkin Gold Series.
Before you throw away your cheap Belkin you could also try to mask (the contact) or cut (the wire) with the +5V at the A connector. The cable I use is an old generic (unbranded) that probably came with an old HP printer! I liked it best among a bunch I tried (many generics & a few branded). I eventually disconnected the +5V (but not ground). It allowed good timbre, 3D soundstage and superb timing giving excellent insight into the recording!
These are the few branded cables I tried in a very rough order of preference (all subjective, and based on my setups, the above generic as ref).
Belkin Gold Series (1m, 3m) - good all around, but not as much insight
Vertere Pulse D-Fi (1m micro to USB B adapter) - `polished, fast`, but less insight
C2G Ultima (1m); Tripplite U023-003 (has the ferrite chokes) - good, but less insight
Supra USB 2.0 (1.5 m) - smooth `full` sound but glazes over some detail, image not as good
*Chord Silver Plus (1m) - was distracted by a `dryness, hardness` in the upper frequencies *
Experimentation is best with the DAC-V1, and ultimately will be very rewarding. The mR will improve its low level resolution and soundstage definition. In my current setup there is a slight penalty of thinning out the sound a bit. PRaT remains DAC-V1 but the resolution all around is a couple of notches up. I'm surprised different usb cables make any difference as the V1 usb input is isolated. Have you completed a bit perfect test with each cable? My own recommendation would be any Belkin usb cable certified by USB-IF.

Me too. I was very skeptic on this matter but the improvement is amazing (cheap Belkin vs pricy Kubala) - lows became much more defined, precise, powerfull and even louder (Dave Lombardo drumming is insane like never before), much better and detailed ups, much better resolution overall. It is significantly better in just every aspect!
I really hope the microrendu will give even better results.

As a source I use a pretty powerfull home pc. Unfurtunatelly it has crappy old fans and not so good PS. I plan to adress those issues.
Funny you are not the only pereon praising original usb printer cables. But i think cheapish aftermarket ones are of lower quality.
Thanks, will give it a read. And try to expirement as much as possible.
But that Kubala cable really impressed me, I have nether thought I could consider a usb cable for that price, but it us actually the case.
Does the Kubala sound brighter or smoother and warmer? Have you tried the bit perfect test on both cables?
Tripplite U023-003 is favourite of mine. I would have continued to use this if it wasn't for my macbook that has usb c port

It hard to define really... like both! More datailed, more 3d, more powerfull, very musically, the bass more controlled, overall very balanced and natural. The belkin just sounds dull, limited tonally and like with cut frequencies on both ends. BUT it was mostly evident on hi-res tracks.
On belkin the mids are more pronounced at the cost of bass and treble. I.e. on "Wish you were here" there is constant feeling that the drums and cymbals need to be much louder. It is just totally different league.
I just returned the Kubala and the drop in sound is really dissapointing ![]()
