Nserve app constantly crashes?
Posted by: Lewis on 16 March 2017
Took delivery of my UnitiServe last week and whilst I am loving it so far, I find that the N-serve app on my iPhone crashes with unfathomable regularity. Whenever I rip a CD and create a new playlist, as soon as I add the tracks the app crashes and exits. It still creates the playlist and adds the tracks but I need to open it again every single time. Is there a fix for this, or has anyone had similar issues?
Thanks
I think you need to create the playlists using the Naim app.
That doesn't work. I've already tried it.
I don't see a reason why you can't. Have you spoken to Naim? If not, do that. The Naim app playlist functionality works for everyone else. Even I can do it.
I think you are right when you create a new playlist from Nserve the app will crash, however the playlist is created and it can be edited without problems after the first crash.
the nice thing about the server playlists is that they are stored on the server, and can be backed up and used by other players, at least my Bluesound node 1 could play the playlist I had created on ns01. On the current Naim app playlists cannot be saved that way.

So I am not the only person this happens to, I knew it wouldn't be just me!
Using the Naim app to create a playlist just makes it a temporary playlist on the app rather than a permanent one you can access on the US. So is there any way to prevent this constantly crashing. Surely this is not normal? Thanks.
Yes - the recommended solution is to create a playlist on a server level.

Hi Adam, when you say 'on a server level' can you explain further what you mean please? Thanks.
I agree with Adam, creating playlists on the N-Serve app means that they are stored on the Unitiserve, and can be backed up to a NAS and easily restored. They appear as a folder on the Naim app UPnP input. Creating playlists on the Naim app is a bit easier, as you don't have to leave the app to create or manage them. However, I have found them to be prone to corruption, and I haven't found an effective way to back them up. As they are stored on the app device (iPhone) they are not visible on different devices if you use more than one iOS or Android app for control. That may be a good thing, especially if you have multiple users, or it could be a PITA, depending on how you use the streamer.

There are two ways to create playlists on a UnitiServe:
- Via n-Serve app for an iOS device - this is the one you've been trying
- Via n-Serve app for OS (for Apple Mac) or Naim Desktop Client (for Windows)
This is a very reliable and stable method. The beauty of playlists created on a server is that they are accessible to all streamers on your network and are independent of a control device you use.
If you tell me which operating system (Mac OS or Windows) you use I can guide you through the steps.

I find the NServe crashes on my early version iPad, I've always put this down to the iPad capacity. General crashes rather than creating playlists.... However this discussion got me thinking about the use of playlists for compilation albums, can someone fill in a few gaps please, what this provides and how is it set up. Eg does it allow searching for specific tracks and help overcome compilation album limitations.
Thanks
