ssd high end nas?

Posted by: French Rooster on 16 March 2017

i don't know and don't understand why there is no high end ssd nas. There is melco, aurender, innuos, unitserve , core...which are nas and also streamers. But just high end nas, to associate with streaming dacs as nds, ndx or other, i think they don't exist. It is curious.

When naim nds is associated with unitserve or core in ethernet mode, we don't need the streaming part of the serve or core, just the nas ( and perhaps the ripping part).   I just find the kstore ssd nas, but no reviews  of it...

Maybe because a $300 nas is just fine.

Mechanical drives in a NAS with RAID 1 redundancy are still a lot cheaper than SSDs with the same capacity.

Pierre, the QNAP Silent NAS Series are SSD NASses for home applications. You might want to check them on the QNAP website. :D

A 'high end' and by that I take it to mean 'really expensive' nas won't sound any better than a decent standard one. My Qnap TS253A is very powerful and with its two 3TB WD Red drives cost £480, which I thought was quite a lot. It sounds just as good, in fact better, than a UnitiServe and is really easy to use. I suppose you could put SSD drives in it but I don't have a need for absolute silence as it lives in the dining room. Most people don't have the nas in the listening room and have it hidden away somewhere, so the odd clonk from the drives doesn't matter. The way I look at it is that if a £500 nas sounds as good as a £2,000 bespoke solution, that's £1,500 to spend on music, which is the point of having the nas in the first place.

SSD compared to HDD are just faster access,  thats about it,  They don't do anything faster that changes anything in our music data stream function.

If you have a NAS, you already have a CPU, IO ports and an OS (usually Linux); adding a streamer with USB output doesn't really require anything more than a software media player - so the devices with Audio Specific pretensions include one, because they can.

i have seen on other forums that some have preferred the sound of the lumin l1 nas ( with or without optional ps) vs conventional nas. has anybody tried this?

Posted on: 18 March 2017 by Huge

The Lumin L1 uses a 2TB 2.5" HDD: I don't know of any HDD drives of that format that are designed for NAS operation.

The closest would be the WD 'Media Drive' series designed for things like PVRs, but they're still not designed for 24x7 use so power management is critical (as is wake-up time when used outside a complete Lumin ecosystem).

Anyone who claims to be able to detect any difference sound wise from material stored on one NAS or the other is frankly deluded. Audio woo at it's worst.

Correct.

I am more than happy to buy you a 12 bay synology, stuff it with Samsung Pro SSD discs, paint the casework in gold glitter, throw a sprinkling of Swarovsky crystals over the top, and lets not forget a butt-clenchingly expensive ethernet cable and mains lead because *obviously* they will make a huge difference, and then sell it to you for a 10x profit margin.

And you will think it is *utterly fantastic* because of the width of the invoice.

See, i too could be a high-end hifi manufacturer too

You convinced me Jon.  Could I order one with the pink Swarovsky crystals?

They give the music a slightly warm tonal balance.

pink is extra cost, of course...

Posted on: 18 March 2017 by jon h

maybe 10x margin is a trifle high. How about 70% margin, after all thats what the dealer margin is for many cables, or so i hear

I agree, and that what most people say about directional cables, ethernet cables, speaker cables but there will always be those who swear on their mother's grave that they sound different.

Cute if not disconcerting Jon. I have read articles pointing out differences of presentations between US HDD and SSD and acclaiming N1Z.. :]

Just not from Amazon...

i think this topic is not finished, until you hear a melco n1z directly in a streaming dac as nds( the melco has two internet ports, very advanced power supplies, filtering...).

i just heard the n1a into the nds, the sound was dynamic and natural, big soundstage, and a bit more details than my unitserve tp ps.

A nas is like a transport for a dac. I think it deserves the same importance.

Nothing wrong with conventional HDDs in a NAS that needs to be overcome by SSD. M2 SSD for fast caching video works, I can attest to that. I wouldn't dream of down sizing my HDDs and replacing them with more expensive SSDs. Don't see the point.

Posted on: 19 March 2017 by Bert Schurink

I am not sure if the ssd is better as the HDd, but for the Melco the people who have heard the difference give the ssd version more credits. Now the question is of course due to the disks or due to the overall better build of the nas. I know for myself that a high quality nas makes a big difference. Out of practical and financial reasons I have opted for the hdd version and I am happy with that choice....
