Diagram DAC-CD5XS-XS2-Flatcap

Posted by: Psiko on 18 March 2017

Good Morning.
I own a team with CD5XS, FlatcapXS and XS2. Now I am thinking of buying the DAC. I use din lavender.
I have consulted the DAC manual, and it is not detailed how to make the DAC connections to my CD5XS and XS2.
I would appreciate (and would be useful to other customers) a diagram of the connections between those devices.

Ok - CD5XS - S/PDIF Out (make sure switch is in right position to turn this output on) to DAC S/PDIF input (you have 4 to choose from here). use a BNC to BNC cable. This is your digital output from the CD player to the DAC as your CD player is now being used as a digital transport.

DAC DIN output to Nait XS2 input - ie CD / HDD. This is your analogue output from the DAC to the amplifier. Use the lavender connection you had between CD5XS and XS2.

IIRC, if you use the FlatcapXS to power the CD5XS, then it will not give you any gain when using the CD5XS with the DAC (as it's used to feed part of the analogue output stage in the CD5XS). You will not be using the analogue outputs on the CD5XS when you use an external DAC so disconnect the FlatcapXS from the CD5XS and just use it with the XS2 only.

Hope that helps

Thank you very much James for your kind and quick response.
I now understand the form of connections.
And also, that if I am using the Flatcap with my CD5XS, this is no longer useful if I add the DAC.
I have connected the Flatcap only to the CD5XS, but not to the XS2 amplifier, because I compared that if I also connect to the XS2, it loses nuances, details and sounds in the high frequencies.
Do you think it is better option to have a DAC and do without Flatcap, than my current configuration?

Absolutely PSIKO. nDAC is a no brainer, really. It brings the CD5 XS to a different league and opens the door to demat and HD.:D

Hi PSIKO - when you have the DAC, try the FlatcapXS on the XS2 again. You may find in this configuration you get more benefit by using the FlatcapXS in this way. As Chag mentions the DAC upgrade will be the biggest bang for buck but worth trying the XS2/FCXS combination again. Let us know how you get on

Thanks, again, James.
Yes, when I have the DAC I will do this that you tell me, and I will inform.

Thanks, Jag!

So, when I have and connect the DAC, should I then connect the Flatcap only to the XS2 ... or connect the Flatcap to the CD5XS and the XS2 at the same time? With my current configuration, Flatcap and CD5XS are better only.
I think I understand in your message (apologize my bad English) that connecting the Flatcap only to the CD5XS has no benefit.

Hi Psiko - yes that's the best thing. The Flatcap XS won't do anything for the CD5XS when just using it as a transport

Thanks James. I understand.
No single question is whether the DAC "removes" or "cuts out" the "details" and "subtleties" that are achieved in high frequencies, if somehow "loses something" in the high frequencies. The CD5XS with Flatcaps (and lavander cable) is very "detailed" in high frequencies.

We can all tell you that the nDAC highs and lows are quite more reaching and detailed. This without saying that basses are tight and fast, and timbres are dense, airy, in particular with the latest firmware v4.11.8, and very well tuned. Last but not least, PRaT is of Naim greatest. :D
