Sky Q, Internal Powerline adapters and my Naim

Posted by: Simon-in-Suffolk on 19 March 2017

To share an advisory tale  on Sky Q. I had ordered and have just had installed a Sky Q box and a Sky Q mini box - It was initially quite an ordeal with some challenging Sky customer services experiences - but moving on. I had the Sky Q and Sky Q minibox setup with ethernet.. all was ok but I noted my Naim was sounding a little 'dry'.. It was bugging me.

Separately I noted that the Sky Q boxes were creating their own Wifi SSIDs even though I was using wired ethernet... I had to get sort this... a quick peruse on google and I found how to get into the 'Installers menu' - Home- Settings - 0-0-1 - select .. and I proceeded to turn off the wifi radios - but also in that setting area I found the internal Powerline adapters were activated on the Sky boxes - Jeez - that was a sneaky thing to find - so I disabled them on both the Sky Q and Mini Box and yes  my Naim returned to sounding itself again...

Yes it could all be psychological, but I suspect not - at least Powerline technology and unnecessary wifi SSIDs are now disabled and am simply using efficient ethernet connectivity with perfect connected Hidef .

The worry thing is that unless you go into the Installers menu there is no way of knowing that this horrible Powerline technology is activated...

Hi Simon, good spot; thanks for sharing.

Don't you gave a dedicated spur for your Naim kit? I ask because 1) I'm surprised if you don't 2) if you do I can't see how the powerline tech would have any impact?

What is the proximity of you SkyQ to your Naim boxes? I guess it's always good to minimise errant SSID's.

I also use Sonos into my 272 and you can disable SonosNet via 'unpublished' engineer settings, although the ZP80 freaks out whereas the ZP90 behaves nicely.

Hi, no dedicated spur at the moment - although I have a dedicated run with a lead using wifi impeding braid powering my Naim power block. As far as proximity, I guess the Sky Q boxes are all within 20 feet of the Naim albeit one through a thick brick wall.

Jon, to be honest once I turned off those nasties it has worked quite well, and it allows HD viewing around the house, even via iPads  including downloads and recordings ..
