Uniti core / annoying noise from CD-Rom (pseudo-eject) every few minutes
Posted by: Lorenz on 22 March 2017
Hello,
my Uniti core tries to eject a CD that does not exist every few minutes with a noise :-(. Very annoying.
Inserting a CD, ripping it and auto eject once finished works like a charm...
Unfortunately the Uniti core simply tries to ejects the CD again and again. Period between pseudo-ejects varies. 3-5-7 Minutes. VERY annoying.
Defective Uniti core? Malfunctioning firmware v1.3? User error?
Anything I can do to avoid the annoyance?
Best, Lorenz
I'd suggest getting it swapped for another one. Or just getting your money back. The Core certainly seems to do wrong more than right.
Lorenz, I would phone or email Naim support for their advice here. I have not experienced what you describe, but they may have done.
Nigel, sorry to hear your experience of the Core hasn't been to your satisfaction so far - can you tell me more about your 'wrong' experiences?

Have you tried rebooting the Core? If the misbehaviour disappears, it is likely to be a software error. If it is still there after reboot, it could be an hardware failure. In any case calling Naim support seems like the next obvious step to do. Best, nbpf
Hello,
I did already get in touch with Naim. Answer is "Is this when the unit has gone into standby and then you wake it using the app? If so then this is normal."
Observations after retesting with the information above:
Good news. It obviously has something to with the Naim App accessing the Uniti core as the unwanted and annoying sound is heard when the Naim App talks to the device for "the first" after a launch of the app or after a period of time.
Bad news. Good news do not count for me as the threshold for auto-standby is set to either never or 12/24 hours. Therefore a standby mode should never (or rarely) happen at all. Definetely not every few minutes (something like 3-7 minutes between – at random times).
Advice appreciated.

Lorenz, that doesn't sound right. Testing my own Core, it does seem that this is the noise you get when the unit is woken from standby. From what you're saying, you're getting this noise every few minutes when the unit is awake?

Lorenz, Richard I just get a double click from my Core when you wake it from standy by either using the App or switch after that it is totally silent apart from when ripping CDs.
PCD, I can concur.
Hi Richard,
I will try to record both the normal CD-ROM eject sound and the SOUND that core emits every few minutes. To my ears: the same or very similar sound. BUT I have set the device to NOT go into standby – therefore no sound at all should be heard (or not sooner that 12/24 hours)....
Best, Lorenz
PS Ripping itself is so silent I barely notice it it's just the typical mechanical sound every PC-sytle slot-in-CD-ROM emits ever since.
OK Lorenz, do send the recording to Naim tech support as they are best able to assist here.
I just put my iPhone on top of the core and recorded two things and put the files on wetransfer.
1_BAD.mp3 – this is the misbehavior of my core. The sound I hear every 3 to maybe 7 minutes (no matter what the Auto-Standby on the core is set to. Sound like ejecting a CD – despite the fact that no CD is in the Core. Please remember I have set the Standby to either never or something like 12 hours – the device should not even get close to sleeping.
2_GOOD_CD_RIPPING.mp3 for comparison – it’s me inserting a CD-rom then having the Core rip that disc and pressing the eject button just to spit the disk out again. 36 seconds in total.
Number 2 is OK. It’s a CD being inserted and being ripped. The sound/noise in this scenario is OK considering the fact that this should happen only one time while actually ripping the CD.
Number 1 is a NO GO. There is absolutely no reason and it is louder than most of the music I’m listening to.
Please advise. Defective Core? Faulty firmware? Faulty app? User error?
At the moment I’m so frustrated with the core that I unplug it except for testing.
Best, Lorenz
Yes, it' is very annoying that the Core make an unnecessary mechanical noise every time it is woken up.
Fingers crossed that a software update will cure this.
