Holiday Speaker Recommendations
Posted by: Dazlin on 22 March 2017
Hi, I'm not sure if this should be in padded cell or here but I'm hoping someone out there has experience of a lightweight, compact speaker they can recommend which won't make my ears cry or cost me a packet at the check-in desk.
If it's Bluetooth, fine but can cope with a wire.
Budget expectations around £50-£100but not fixed. Sources mostly iPhones & iPads.
Thanks in advance.
Ultimate Ears Boom 2
B&O offerings are over your stated budget, but are worth a listen, if you could stretch. Logitech, JBL, and Bose make interesting options in lower pirice points.

My JBL Charge 3 fills a medium sized room with ease - decent clarity also. The battery lasts for weeks after a full charge.
FWIW, it's also waterproof (should you want to listen in a pool...)
The AudioPro Addon T3 is head and shoulders above any portable speaker I've had or heard.
Well worth £160 plus a tenner for hold luggage. It's not the most compact unit by modern standards, but a little extra bulk really pays off sonically, and the battery life is amazing.
We use ours a lot at home too: in the bathroom, garden and in the bunker we started digging late last year.

+1 We are also very happy with this little Bose speaker!!
JBL flip for about £70 on amazon is a bargain, I take mine away with me and it sounds good with Apple lossless files, goes quite loud too.

Soundmatters Moment. I saw it on Analog Planet at year end 2016. They have other bigger models. Mine sounds great for music and movies on the road and the sound in the nearfield is remarkable.
Ue boom, very good sound, build like a tank, splash proof, kid proof, tested and approved
I bought this from amazon on Black Friday last year. With it's made to measure carry case it cost me less than £40. Costs just over £50 for the two now:

My fiancee has the little Bose Soundlink which is good but this Anker one is virtually disposable at one third of the price and more than adequate sound quality. Goes loud too. Instead of being just for holidays it now resides in the bathroom and gets some real hammer.

Way over budget but Ruark MR1's are very good or you can buy the R1 DAB while let's you Bluetooth across from i-devices too. You can buy a rechargeable battery pack too for portability.
Thanks guys, really appreciate your time and some interesting gear out there.
I got chance to listen to the Ultimate Ears (£99) and yes, impressive clarity if a little light in the bass. I didn't listen to its big brother at £149 as it was just too big. The Bose mini was nice too but at 1.3kg was a pair of jeans and 3 shirts heavier than some of the Others.
I liked the look & reviews for the audio Pro Addon T3 which looks like a contender for the cottage holidays where I have the car & not restricted so much.
I listened to the JBL Pulse and whilst it had a nice depth to the bass it lacked in midrange and was again too big for this trip. I ended up going with Karl and a JBL Flip 3, mainly as I don't need the volume on this trip as much as the compact lightweight convenience. Another factor is it will let 3 devices pair simultaneously; ideal as there will be 3 music lovers chatting about mostly music and we can play what comes up with no fuss or wires. Also it's the size of a beer can (440ml) and about the same weight. It sounds good for the £69 too, enough of everything and particularly clear, if a little forward mid.
Thanks again.
Darren
Thanks for all the earlier answers, which I'll use when I next fly on hols. I thought I'd offer an alternative for different holiday types now Darren has his answer, my next couple of holidays will be cottage hires in the UK. I''ll take one of my Muso Qbs, with the handy handle box, stick in the boot of the car, memory stick with WAV rips, and use the cottage wifi for app control. A couple of bottles of good burgundy and a great holiday will be had.

Then a atom with bookshelf, then maybe a 272/200, then then then... a truck moving statements with sopra 3s
Offcourse reinstall the electricity in the cottage with room treatments and stuff....
If funds permits, I really do believe that will be the case for us, the forum members
A couple of bottles of good burgundy? Just a single overnight stay? The wine would not even have time to rest after the journey.
A few years ago I bought a Damson Twist. When placed on a resonant surface it makes the surface act as a sound radiator.Discovering the effects of different surfaces is fun.
It is small enough to almost not count (and be carried in hand luggage if such a journey is necessary). As a way of listening to R4 (for Today and The Archers) whilst in the depths of Europe it is more than acceptable.
Riva S was be my choice. If you buy two they can be paired up wirelessly to provide a true stereo pair. They used to be quite expensive but the price dropped dramatically recently. I bought a pair.

I've not heard all the offerings...but as between the little Bose speaker and the little B&O, I preferred the little round B&O. I came close to buying the B&O. It sounded quite good for its size.
When I travel on my own, I make do by placing my iPhone close to a wall; in a corner is even better. The sound bounces around a bit and certainly sounds "bigger." And I've not carried an extra thing, or an extra 16 ounces or so. But for say a family holiday...I've carried a speaker in the past and would opt for something small.
