Editing albums on uniti core and songs ending short

Posted by: Redhammer on 25 March 2017

greetings to all, just taking the plunge into the Naim world with a Uniti Core yesterday which feeds into a MF NuVista CD for the dac. I seem to have two issues when ripping some of my obscure cds with no metadata how I manually edit cds and when on a playlist tracks are ending a few seconds short which is somewhat annoying. Uploading at moment via flac as per Naim recommendations if this makes a difference

Cheers

Red hammer, greetings. The metadata editing is due for release shortly with a firmware update. Do not try editing by any other means as it could wreck the core database.

As for the playlist tracks I would suggest contacting Naim support on this.

Cheers with a couple of thousand cds to upload it's going to take a while so I can leave the odd ones until the update, I will email naim on the track problem as the reason for buying this unit was to be able to create playlists and this error does defeat its purpose

regards Rob

I have the same issue with tracks ending short (and often the start of the next track repeating very briefly) but only on CDs ripped to the Core - all is ok with uploaded albums. Happens with albums and playlists.  Reported to Naim in the last couple of days but won't hurt for another to do so.

Yes I too have that skip at the beginning, I'll email Naim as the unit I have is on loan from the dealer, the one I've ordered isn't coming in until may so I'm going to ensure that one won't has this issue. All my cds will be ripped to the Core so they had better resolve this.

Enjoy editing your metadata on your phone or tablet.......I hope you don't have too many.

I've recently taken ownership of a Uniti Core and have also experienced a problem with gaps between successive tracks and the start of some tracks repeating too, with CDs ripped on the Core.

I would be interested to hear from others who have posted earlier with this same problem, if they have had any further insights/workarounds/solutions wrt to this issue from Naim support yet.

Hi, I contacted naim last week and they say they are aware of this issue on flac ripped cds and there software dept is currently working on it. I certainly hope it's resolved by the time my actual unit arrives next month, I don't want to have ripped all cds for nothing.

@ red hammer - thanks very much for the feedback. luckily I have only ripped a handful of CD's so far. Likewise, I hope they remedy the issue soon!

It looks like Core metadata editing will be much the same as it is on the Unitiserve using N-Serve. Using this on an iPhone is simplicity itself, and I certainly wouldn't want to fire up a computer instead.

If there's a problem with this facility, I think it will be the limited number of editable fields available (again, the same as Unitiserve) that people will object to compared to more comprehensive metadata editing tools like Metadatics.

Hi,

did they give any indication of when it will be fixed? I've had to stop ripping me CDs as the issue is so annoying.

Well I picked up my new uniti core last weekend and using the HDD from the demo unit I had loaded cds onto, everything worked fine.......until last night, the same problem has started again. I think what causes it is playing tracks on HDD while ripping as this is the only thing I have done differently since using it on Sunday. I'll be emailing Naim tech again today and advise on answer later

Hi Richard, should we still expect this new update before the end of the month? Would there be any plan for further updates later this year? :)

Hi chag, I don't know what Naims schedule is on this I'm afraid. I believe the metadata editing is currently being beta tested but beyond that we'll just have to wait on the release announcement.

it is better to stop and wait until naim will fix it. I feel naim takes a long time to fix this problem...

I emailed naim again yesterday though didn't get an answer till late which I to reply to. I'm somewhat annoyed too as this is a brand new unit, I was hoping it had the previous version software...it didn't. I've actually found the cause too, as this worked fine for a few days then I started playing tracks other cds while one was ripping.....that was it the problem started again and now I cannot play anything without the skip and the track finishing short. If it's not resolved by the time I've finished ripping my collection I think there going to supply a new one the I just avoid ripping anything new cds until it's resolved.

Also do you find once it's played a few skipping tracks the app freezes or jumps tracks.

....not really the introduction to the Naim world I was looking forward too

I am sorry to read about your disappointment RedHammer. I guess it is still urgent for me to wait still and resist a bit longer to make a compulsive purchase..  How is S/PDIF SQ BTW?   :rouge:

hey chag,

i was wondering to take or not to take the core. The unitserve tp ps sounded the same for me, in ethernet mode, perhaps very very very minimalist differences in sound quality.

I decided finally to upgrade my unitserve with an uptone js2 ps. You can not upgrade the ps of the core... I think the quality of the ps on servers and nas are the most important thing.

The js2 has two outputs and will power in the same time my switch, an upgrade too.

For spdif, the core or unitserve as players, i would take a melco if i were you....or cad audio transport ( with ripping possibly). They are better in this mode, as pointed by hifi plus/ hifi news/ear  reviews.

For myself i will wait and see the evolution of the market , to take later something really better than my unitserve.( the core is not). My new js2, not arrived yet, can power a lot of items, perhaps a melco n1z/2 or high end future nas or router and switch. For now it will give a maximum boost to the unitserve, more than the tp ps. ( the tps will power my first switch , before the optical bridge) . The js2 will power also the last switch, before nds.

It is only my opinion i know, but i have read a lot of reviews and opinions of forum members...and i had to take a decision about the core.

The last thing: the core presents today so many bugs and errors that i am not sure naim will solve all. We will see in the next months.

Thank you Pierre for your good advice. I'll have to wait a few more months and see or hear, where to go.  8/

same for me. Things may change also when naim will produce a naim dac 2, perhaps with an usb output. If it is the case( as naim dac 100 (?) entry level), the new dac will be able to go with aurender , melco,or innuos zenith, in usb mode...( their best connexion). But it is just a supposition.   ( naim dac has 8 years now).

Hifi critic new number is on the site, but no review of the core. I think the core is not ready to serve hifi reviews yet... ( martin colloms had this review on his plans...).

I am in discussion with martin re the review of core. I'm not sure whether I am going to write part of it or not.

Well yesterday finally took decision to start again & after 854 cds ripped on flac now deleting and using wav. I'd only gone down the flac route after speaking to Naim tech prior to purchase, sound wise actually seems a bit more open. I suppose I should have tested a few cds at the beginning, oh well only 6 weeks wasted!

I think I'll be emailing them for a discount on the DAC V1 when I get round to getting one as compensation

have you truly convinced yourself that WAV sounds better than FLAC on core? And even if so, whether its whether it is worth the intense ballache of a custom rip format specific to Naim (WAV plus custom metadata bits) compared to a widely supported format (FLAC)
