LAN cabling

Posted by: dikkiedirk on 25 March 2017

Hi everyone,

I hope to get my Unitiqute 2 by the end of April and have some questions about LAN and the cables it involves.

Is it beneficial to have a switch nearby the Unitiqute with only router, my NAS holding music and Unitiqute attached. I could use fairly short LAN cables that way. Will any good quality CAT6 cable be sufficient or would a Chord C-Stream make make difference? Will using a linear power supply for the switch be usefull?

Is the Chord Clearway a decent cable to connect my Focal 816W?

I any quality Cat 5e cable or better is ideal. The switch doesn't need to be near the Uniqute, in fact there can be advantages having it further away. Because you are using a switch it doesn't matter what else is attached to it.

Some use fancy network cables to tune out electrical noise to various extents, in which case you might want to experiment with the lead between switch and Uniqute.. but if you are inclined I would equally experiment with cheap cable types from eBay, Amazon etc .. you might be surprised... they don't need to be expensive.

Hie dikkiedirk, welkom in de wereld van Naim.      Short or long ethernet cables make no difference,  but one advantage of having short ethernet cables is if you are tempted to try some boutique cable,  its not so expensive.  And a word of warning,  fancy ethernet can be mad expensive & IMO you don't get great value for money,  so be careful.

Linear PS on a switch is questionable as a  LPS does not always mean better & there is a SMPS that is quieter & less expensive than an LPS called iFi iPower.

Re  Chord Clearway, I've not heard it myself as its quite new on the market.   Clearway has 2.0mm/2 copper wire & FEP insulation.  I use Chord Odyssey which has 3.3mm/2 silver plated copper wires & PTFE insulation & it does a good job on my SuperNait.  I suspect like all Chord cables,  it will do a good job.  Speaker cable is somewhere that experiment can bring good improvements.

Check melco/blue jeans ethernet cables, good value for money

Are they available in the Netherlands? Are they any different than the standard cables at amazon?

Just find them. Don't like the price of 70 Euro per 0.5 m.

You can order them online, they are solid cables with an honest price

what is honest about 70 Euro per 50 cm?

Honesty is a matter of perception. Try EUR 1000 per 1 meter

As Simon wrote - setting up a network is relatively simple. Making it perform well takes some effort - your greatest enemies are not long cable runs but interference / electrical noise.

I found some improvement with an upgraded power supply on a NAS.  I would also recommend puting all your network gear (switch, NAS, router, modem, etc) on a separate mains circuit. Definitely not the same as your Naim.

Haha haha welcome to the world of audiophile ethernet cables...

Check blue jeans they worth the asking price

Which cable is that?

Blue Jeans seems fair. Pity about shipment to Netherlands.

Might go for QED graphite.

DD - The first two answers from Mike and Simon to your original post make a lot of sense. Fiddling around with boutique Ethernet cables is really just icing on the cake and the UQ2 will be quite happy with basic Cat 5e. Your Network will work fine without any audiophile fiddling so just get the basics right, enjoy your UQ2 when it arrives and then, if you want to fiddle later on, you've got plenty of threads on this forum to read up on

Absolutely. Get the basics working. A decent switch such as the Netgear and bog standard Ethernet cables are all you need. As James said, there is plenty of time for fiddling later, should you ever feel the need.

Yeas, it took me some time to save up for the UQ2. It was demoed at my place a while back on my speakers and immediately fell in love with it. I am a music lover but cant handle CDs or Lps anymore and have to rely on a streamer.

I come from a Yamaha receiver with streamer functionality. The UQ2 sounds so much sweeter a more musical than that Yamaha.

I first gonna enjoy this upgrade but ain't gonna spend too much money on cables that add comparatively small improvements. Rather spend it on music, because in the end that is what it is all about.

I paid something like 1,5€ per metre for top Belden cables and 10/15€ for each telegartner to make my long ethernet cable from local electronic supplier, they patch the cord and we tested, 50€ for 20metre top cabling is not too bad

this is diy cheap solution for top cables

before that i was using 20m for 20€ cheap as cables which were really slow despite the cat6 badge on them, so very bad cables exist

but like been said you can just buy decent ethernet cables and enjoy them

i like fiddling

hope you enjoy your new toy, tidal also is a good way to find new music also not too bad to enjoy old ones

I wondered: does it matter whether the NAS is connected to the switch to which the streamer is connected, or is connecting the NAS to the router as fine? When reading up, it seemed the NAS was  commonly connected to the streamer's switch.

Cheers!

Can you tell me which cable exactly? Is it flexible? I haven't be able to find Belden cables per meter, only per 100 meter locally. Where did you get it?

^Give the Tera Grand 'CAT-7 10 Gigabit Ultra Flat Ethernet Patch Braided Cable' or as I have understood from another forum member the non-braided one which is even thinner!  They are thin and fairly flexible but well made and very well priced. When I tried a batch of different cables in my application (including the very nice but stiff Audioquest Diamond), they came out on top for SQ. Tera Grand has a website- check them out.

I got it from local electronics store in Turkey, unfortunately they are not very flexible

Google "protel-elektronik", you will find telegathners as well, the site is in Turkish but it will give you an idea
