UNITICORE: Can't access to a NAS Synology

Posted by: GG in Moscow on 30 March 2017

Hi Everyone,

Just bought 2 products from Naim : the UnitiCore and the Mu-so Qb. Very happy about these products, that are working (almost) fine.

Only one issue, with the UnitiCore: I can’t connect it to my NAS Synology. Strange thing is that the Mu-so accesses it without any problem (WIFI connection). From my Desktop comp I can see the HDD of the UnitiCore and play the music which is on it. And the Mu-so can also access to the shared folders of my Desktop.

The UnitiCore is connected to my NAS through Ethernet connection. The DHCP is activated in the IOS app menu.

I read several post on this forum and made some changes on the NAS accordingly:

Still not working !!

Another detail, The UnitiCore is not brand new from the box. The seller installed it a few days before I bought it and set it up on it’s on server. He told me he was accessing his SONOS server, but couln’t access another one he had (I don’t remember the name). I have reinitialized the UnitiCore by pressing the ON button for 5 secs and did the same thing from the IOS app menu.

Why would the Mu-so see my NAS, and not the UnitCore ??

Any ideas ?

Thanks for your comments and input

  • Activated the Local Master browser
  • Changed the workgroup name on the UnitiCore to WORKGROUP (SO I read then that it was not necessary)
  • Changed the guest credentials of the guest account to allow access.

Still not working !!

a lot of members had problems with the core. Some could resolve certain problems, naim audio is also fixing other. You can read the topic of the 21 march: " uniticore , does what it says in the box". Perhaps you will find your answer in this topic.

Is it possible to do a factory reset on the UnitiCore? I know this is possible with a Mu-so, but I am not familiar with the UnitCore.

Regards,

Jeroen.

Are you saying that the Core is connected directly to the Synology with an Ethernet cable? If so, that's probably where the problem lies - you need to put them both on the network.

No, it is connected to a network, through a hub. As explained, both my Desktop comp and Mu-so see and play music from the Core, and the Core accesses the net (firmware update and different stores ...) normally.

My only issue is the connection between the Synology and the Core. The Mu-so access the Synology w/o problem.

I may be dense, but I got the message the first time...

Perhaps the Forum is having a Core moment. As to your problem I have no other suggestions, other than that if you have the Synology you probably don't need the Core.

On my NS01 when it came back from a repair I had to change the Workgroup to NAIM

When I decided to aquire a streamer, I was indeed looking for something w/o CD Ripper, since I have a NAS, and I also have a stand alone DAC. However, I was alos looking for a connected wireless speaker system (such as Mus-so). The dealer I have been working with for a long time strongly advised me Naim for its quality sound. The ripper is an extra "toy".

As a whole, and apart from the above mentioned issue, I very happy with the conviviality of the 2 products. It seems that the ripping process is not as smooth as NAIM is claiming it to be, but for the moment, i'm just enjoying the music on the 2 systems. App is also nice and convenient to use.

I tried both names : WORKGROUP and NAIM. No difference. Actually, in one of the thread I read before writting, someone said, that it was not impacting the connection....

It depends why you want the Core to see your NAS but if it's because you want the Core to offer music that is stored on the NAS, then you have to tell the Core to treat the NAS as a Music Share. This is explained in the Support wizard for the Core, which you get to via the support button at the bottom of the Core product page on the Naim website or you can also use the link in the Sticky near the top of the Forum. You define which places on your network that should be treated as a Share in the setup for the Core in the app.

I think the Core works like this so you can stop it offering music that exists somewhere but you don't want to play, like your backup for example, or your son's pop music or whatever.

Workgroup is from the Windows XP world... dones not matter anymore.

You have to remove the credentials of the Guest login on the Core. On a Synology, when you set Master Browser, it sets the Guest user with no password.

Hi Manu,

You may be correct, but if the UnitiCore requires this then it opens up your NAS in an irresponsible way w.r.t. security.

When my NS01 came back from repair it failed to reconnect using the credentials that had worked historically. Phil connected remotely, removed the security and it still failed to connect to my Synology 1812+.

I checked the security settings on the Synology and was finally able to get it working, with credentials, setting Workgroup = NAIM on the Synology.

To reiterate: I was connecting my NS01, using Windoze, to my Synology, Linux using a specific User with specific permissions, before repair it did worked with ease, post repair it required the Workgroup = NAIM.

Is UnitiCore still using Windows?

The Core is Linux not Windows.

Is your NS01 still in your Network with the Core?

NS01 is a Windows XP machine, so it needs the Workgroup to be set correctly  and it will get elected as the Master Browser if it is the only Windows device on the network.  The Core, Linux based, is looking for the Browser Table  instead of scanning the network each time... This speed up the discovery process big time.  But if you do not have any Windows machine on your network, you are screwed, it will not find your NAS (the Browser Table will not exist). This is why, right now, you have to set your NAS as the Master Browser.

ON a Synology it sets the Guest user with no password and disable the stand-by mode, your NAS will always be on. Not ideal I reckon...

Apparently Naim is trying to change that...
