Does anyone use NAC 272 without XPS?

not really...I recall everyone saying it was or the 'natural partner' but I disagreed ten and  now and bought the 555PS

People started attaching 555s and thought WOW!

not to mention I believe everyone was so stuck on the price of the unit compared to the PS.....take a look at Naims connection manual and it has the

N272

555PS

NAP300

+1 Greek - Yes indeed was just about to say that too. Naim have always said PS555 is a 272 option, its just people don't like to hear their wallet imploding. I am also pretty sure 500 will go nicely with 272 too

I think the 555PS DR may be the icing, buttercream and decoration on the cake!  

but the damage to my finances is

Now, a 555PS powered Nait2 would certainly stir emotions!

Agree with that,lots of empty space,while the 555 is very impressive looking,..no pshyco-acoustics there,the 555 is a beast.

I think the 555 is meant for the cd555 originally,and it uses both plugs,yet with the 272,you would only use one.Perhaps someone with more knowledge than me can answer this,because i am curious too,as exactly what is used,and what is not with the 272.

I get the impression that it is nearly always valid that an oversized PS does not exist. Better PS, is better SQ.

Are there exceptions known to this observation?

You buy a 272 to go with your 200. 

You buy a 250dr

You buy an xpsdr

You buy a 300dr

You buy a 555psdr

You buy a 282/hicapdr

You buy an NDS

You buy a 552dr (you skip the 252 because you don't like it)

You buy a 500dr

You think crikey this has got a bit out of hand, sell the lot and buy an Atom.

Oh dear, speaking as someone who's lining up a trial 272, in an effort to reduce the present box count, I do hope that you aren't proved right!

I've run the 272 without a power supply into a NAP500 while my NAC552 was away being DR'd... it sounded extremely  good and kept me very happy for the four weeks my regular pre was on vacation in Salisbury.

So I guess what HH says above is absolutely true - the result will depend heavily on the quality of the power amp you're partnering it with.   Which leads to the conclusion that you can leave your 272 'naked' and invest in the best quality power amp you can...  a 250DR would be the minimum spec for me, but if your credit card is looking healthy, the NAP300 would be an awesome partner for the 272.

PS - having just read the suggestion that a 555PS would partner the 272... for that level of wonga you've gotta' be looking at the NAP300 option 

 

Roger,when you had the 272 hooked up for that month,was it "bare"the whole time,or did you try one of your 555's on it?

The 272 was as naked as the day it was manufactured, all the time.  I just didn't feel the need to try to squeeze any more out of the combination.

It's only right if you let it be right. It's a shame you're not nearer to me and could hear what's playing now, on a 272 with 'just' an XPS and a 250. And some superseded speakers and some SL cables. It's just wonderful. Yes, it could be better, but many things could be: bigger house, bigger car, more money, bigger dick, flatter stomach, better hair....

Yes, see my post above (and that of Simon in Suffolk).   I preferred the FlatCap to the HiCap on the Nait XS and even more so on the CD5 XS.

As far as I am concerned bottom line naked 272 is very good ..... with psu even better....and the better the psu even better. As for 282 it is very close .... I use mine with a 500dr and the 272 instantly showed the benefits.  I have no doubt the 552 would be an awesome upgrade .... but I really don't think I will ever do that as it's currently great and I have managed to keep my box count down. What I will do is upgrade my mains supply with a dedicated spur.
