UnitiServe/SSD
Posted by: ken c on 01 April 2017
what do you know... my US/SSD died last night -- looks like a power supply problem as it doesn't turn on anymore -- checked fuse, OK. So no streamed music this w/end :-(
discussing next steps with dealer -- Signals - who responded very promptly when i reported the fault.

Commiserations, Ken! Surely you can enable a server on your NAS to give you music while the US is down?

i would if i could. i'm quite thick. i have a Ready NAS Duo and i have no idea how to achieve what you suggest, not even sure its possible, unless you know different.
its not all doom and gloom though-- this incident has given me a chance to play vinyl more -- (so i am not missing music in general -- just streamed music of course). I hadn't played my LP12 for some time -- i have now and it still sounds great.

Chris was reffering to installing Asset or MinimServer and using that to stream from your NAS.
Ken, I believe the ReadyNAS comes with a UPnP server on it, called ReadyDLNA, and all you need to do is turn this on if it's not already, then your streamer should be able to see it and play music. To get you up and running, that has to be easier than installing Minim or something. Possibly even easier than playing vinyl!!?

all i can see from the manual is a setting for uPnP discovery and that is turned ON, but the NDS still doesnt 'see' the ReadyNAS...

Ken, I don't have a Netgear NAS myself, so I'm not really the person to help you here, but I know some other forum members use them, so maybe someone else will be able to chip in?

Is it the duo or the duo v2. since they use different hardware the management interface on the 2 are different. If it is a Duo v2, the upnp server should be turned on. When my ns01 was at Naim my mu-so qb could find the upnp server. But the upnp server only scans the media share, and I have not been able to add more shares outside the media share on the Duo. It is most likely possible just not with a screen reader. The userinterface on the readynas is terrible in that respect.

model is, as far as i can tell, ReadyNAS Duo [X-RAID] which suggests this is not version 2.

Excellent! Enjoy the music.

trying to rip a newly delivered Baaba Maal CD this morning -- and the US kept spitting it out! Ah ...now what? i have just had the power supply changed so was getting a bit concerned.
tried twice in vain -- then i thought it must be the CD itself. Naaah... tried another CD that previously ripped OK -- same problem!! Ah, so its probably not the specific CD then...
then i decided to powercycle the US -- and when it came back -- tried again.
this time, phew, it worked!! thanks God for that!
anyone experienced this before -- anyone can offer an explanation? probably some local issue?
Glad it seems all sorted (well, i hope) as i have a few new CDs coming soon!

I've had this before Ken. Either letting it rest or power-cycling the US helped. It probably got 'confused' as to what this narrow slot at the front is for....

I suspect that it failed to connect to the network and so didn't have an Internet connection. Restarting it would give it another chance to ask for a lease from the router. I think unplugging the network lead from the US, waiting a minute and then plugging it in again might well have the same effect.
