Raspberry Pi 3 - Mea Culpa

Posted by: Mr Underhill on 02 April 2017

The only reason have started this thread, which I expect to die very quickly, is that i have done posts across a few threads where I have extolled the RP3 over my Synology NAS. Now I believe that I have mis-attributed the LARGE step up in performance that I have heard. I will go into some nauseating detail in a following post, but first, here is the truncated version:

If you have been on the forum for more than five minutes you will have read about the positive experiences people have had with USB sticks hosting music files.
There have been a number of threads on other fora, set up by the same poster, for a particular StarTech Gigabyte USB extender - just one type, and a more expensive (£500) variant. Bolstered by LPSU, VBus2 & IFI Purifier2 = Uber USB (U2SB).

I tried this on my NAS and it made a small positive difference. Moving this kit onto the RP3, with minimal OS and very quiet PSU (IFI 5V) has, I believed, allowed the full effect to shine through.

I say this as I demoed my system to a friend on Friday. In doing so I accidentally streamed the music from my NAS through the RP3, all via LMS. The things that ate into my satisfaction were there in full display. Moving back to the same music via the U2SB route bought immediate relief.

I may well be showing my dimness but I have absolutely no idea what you are on about.

What has the humble pie done?

I'm with you SJB. Stanley Unwin would be proud of your discourse, Mr Underhill.

I liked the bit about the London, Midland and Scottish Railway.

John.

I extolled the virtues of the Raspberry Pie 3 running Logica Media Server over running the same server on my Synology NAS.

However, if I run the same files from the NAS through the RP3 I get the same sub-par result.

What DOES work really well through the RP3, and not half so well through the Synology, is one of these:

StarTech USB2G4LEXT2 - 4 Port USB 2.0 over Gigabit LAN or Direct Cat5e / Cat6 Ethernet Extender System

I would link, but I suspect it would breach forum rules; and they have leapt in price - shrinking pound.

The StartTech USB2G4LEXT2 use similar technology to that no used in the PS Audio LANrover.

I mis-attributed the cause of the step up in performance, and didn't want anyone to experiment with the RP3 in the mistaken belief that it would, on its own, aid higher sound quality.

Hope this clarifies

Don't be a fool, John, the man rides a horse! He's hardly going to take the train, is he (although he says he's trialled a LANDrover, so who knows?) Then again, quite how he manages to get an RP3 to work in a 4x4 is beyond me - even an LP12 would be bouncing all over the place in the back of one of those! Anyway, enough of this gobbledygook - I'm sure the OP will explain.......

No, I think I will just open myself to more ridicule.

Curse my conscience!

No need to disappear again, Frodo! We just don't understand what this stuff does.
