Mu-so sounding distorted?

Posted by: peterv on 02 April 2017

Hi everyone,

I am quite new to the audio/Naim world, though I have been reading a lot on this forum these past few months and I have already posted a question regarding the Mu-so about a month ago here:

https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...-ghz-network-and-usb

I don't want to resurrect that thread, but I was happy with the answers I got and I bought a Mu-so two weeks ago and I must emphasize that I really like what I am hearing. But since two days I hear some kind of distortion while listening to - for example - Ab Ovo by Dutch pianist Joep Beving. At ~ 35 seconds into the track the piano sounds rather distorted on the Mu-so and again and at 1:29 into the song, I get the same distorted sound, as if the music is played much too loud.

First I thought this was maybe the low resolution of Apple Music, but the same happened while listening to the track on Spotify and just to make sure, I even bought the music in CD quality on Qobuz and I've played the file via USB, to rule out it wasn't my network/cabling. Than I thought maybe it was the recording itself, that may for some reason be of lesser quality, so I also streamed the music to my lowly Beoplay A2 and there everything sounded fine. I think the sound of the distorted piano is well above 4 kHz and now that I know what to listen for, I think I can hear the same kind of distortion around the same frequency in other music.

So my question is, could it be that after settling in by using the Mu-so for the first two weeks, the speakers need to somehow be tightened again? Or is there something else going on that you guys recognize from my description? I'd very much appreciate any suggestions you might have, thanks in advance,

Peter

Peter,

have you set up the Mus-So for distance from the rear wall and also switched off the loudness - the latter is, for some reason, on by default?

Hi Richard, yes I have done so when I installed the Mu-so after I bought it, thank you.

It shouldn't sound distorted and there is no loudspeaker needing tightening thing going on. I suggest you take the file you bought from Qobuz to your dealer and try it on another Qb. You may just be hearing the file as it really is, but listening in your dealer's demo Qb will allow you to check.

Good idea, David. That's what I'm going to do.

Peter, I agree with David.  Check the file on another Qb.  If it's the same, it's the file, if not, then it indicates there may be a problem elsewhere, possibly with  your Qb.
