Fraim recommendations 4 box setup

Posted by: greekspec2 on 02 April 2017

I was looking for advice on what Fraim height is best if I run a single stack of 4 boxes? I seen standard height but since I will be a 4 box stack does anyone suggest doing the medium for my setup? any pics would help thanks

I'd just go for regular height, with your N272 on the top shelf, power amp right underneath and power supply units on two bottom shelves.

Before I split brain from brawn.

Broadly the same set up as you.

Great minds..!

Might it not be better to have at least one taller shelf, second one up, to keep the top two components further from the power supplies?

It looks neat in the photo, but the units also look a bit close to one another. Were there improvements when splitting to brain/brawn, Intothevoid? It'd suggest that more separation is beneficial if so.

That said, most people have to look at their gear occasionally as well as listen to it, so the neatness might win out anyway.

Splitting into brains and brawn didn't give the uplift in performance that I expected, given all that's said on the forum. However, it was driven by more 'domestic' issues (the wall mounting of a couple of cabinets above the fraim and a spot of re-decorating).

Domestic grumbling can drown out any gains from a lower noise-floor.

so a single row stack....would you or any go with medium over standard for "performance" or theres really none to gain?

I would do medium if you don't plan to add more boxes (two medium I believe is the same height as three standard, so +50% higher from the base level). Personally I have standard and never tried medium but if no audio benefits at least I assume cleaning will be easier:-)

Technically, I guess that's not quite brain and brawn? Maybe you could put the 3 brawn boxes on the 3-tier rack, and the 272 on the other one (brawn on the right.) Don't hold your breath, though!

Actually, it's absolutely brawn and brain, with the two power supplies on the right and the head units on the left.

If I was advising Greekspec, I'd say get a base and four standard shelves. 272, 300, gap, 555PS, 300PS.

I would go for a base and three medium shelves

Four bases plus four standard shelves -- air below and above is ideal.  B)

Medium for sitting the source and Pre atop I think will sound better from my own experience.
