Audacity testing problem ?
Posted by: al9315 on 04 April 2017
Just doing a few tests digitising some LPs and have so far managed to do 24/96 copy to SD card of LP side
Loaded into 'Audacity' chopped a track off tried to save it :-
"Save as type" gave options :
1. WAV (Microsoft) signed 16-bit PCM
2. WAV (Microsoft) 32-bit float PCM
+ FLAC and a few others
There is no option for 24/96 ?
I do not understand what 32 bit float is ?
Do not wish to proceed until I have some idea of best way to save files.
Thanks
Try the Export Audio option rather than Save.
Sorry - I was using "export selected audio" then one has to name file and save as...... ?
OK, just did a quick check with a 24/96 Flac file.
Firstly check very left bottom of audacity screen that Project rate is shown as 96,000 Hz. Then select Export Audio (Control + Shift + E)
In the Save as dialog box select "Other uncompressed files". Enter your new file name and under Options choose "Header" = WAV (Microsoft) and "Encoding" = Signed 24bit PCM.
This assumes that you want to save the file as 24/96 WAV.
I should have added that the "Save As" options will be the same if you are saving an edited audio file using the "Export Selected Audio" command from the File menu.
Done it - thanks very much !!!
As a matter of interest what does "32 bit floating point" mean ?
Probably best to google that one rather than try to explain it.
32 bit allows for a greater dynamic range and is often used in editing audio to provide increased "headroom" during editing prior to resampling/dithering to a lower resolution.
vinyl studio far better i paid £20 try for a few times free 96k24 bit sounds vey good

Means fractional values are sent with an exponent as opposed to integers and can therefore represent a greater numeric range than normal signed integer values, 32 bit float point uses one bit for sign, 8 bits for the exponent and 23 bits for the fraction.
This is getting silly !?
Did exactly as advised, all boxes appeared correct:-
Files Name : - Track name entered
Save as type: Other uncompressed files
All appears to work fine, went to file in File Explorer - right clicked 'properties' - it is a "AIFF" file ????????
AIFF has to be selected from the "Header" dropdown list. It is the first option listed i.e. AIFF (Apple/SGI).
You can, of course, convert your AIFF file to WAV.

Well !? - I did ask didn't I?
Thank you Simon - obviously way above me!

WHY has AIFF got to be selected ?
I have done it and it now seems to work, but yet another process - converting files
I originally tried to save it straight away as a WAV file, it appeared to work, but still produced a AIFF file which would not convert to WAV - came up with an error
Looks like I am gradually making some headway
Thank you so much !

I obviously didn't make my comment clear. You don't 'have to' select AIFF at all! It's just that as this is the first option listed in the Header drop down list, it would be easy to unintentionally select this when closing the Header dialog box.
